Hopkins and Lewis Reach Finals on First Day of Invite

ATHENS, Ga. – With a pair of appearances in the men's 1-meter finals, the University of Georgia diving team opened the 2023 calendar year in strong fashion in the first day of the Georgia Diving Invitational Tuesday afternoon at Gabrielsen Natatorium.
Sophomore Rhett Hopkins placed seventh overall with a Zone-qualifying score of 302.25, narrowly missing a new career-best mark. Hopkins opened solidly with a 48.10 on his opening dive before posting a 60.00 on his fourth attempt and closing with a 56.00. Fellow sophomore Nolan Lewis also reached the finals, placing 10th with a score of 273.05.
In prelims, Lewis finished ninth at 288.75, while Hopkins placed 10th with a score of 286.55. Graduate Kevin Li took 15th place with a mark of 268.10 and sophomore Allen Mann finished 21st at 234.20 in his Georgia debut.
In the women's 3-meter prelims, junior Meghan Wenzel narrowly missed the finals with a 14th-place score of 284.00, closing strong with a 54.00 and 54.60 on her last two dives. Freshman Hannah Stumpf placed 21st with a score of 262.30, while fellow rookie Kyler Dixon finished 42nd at 189.30.
The Georgia Diving Invitational continues Wednesday with the women's platform and men's 3-meter events. Competition begins at 11 a.m. at Gabrielsen Natatorium. The meet is not being streamed, but live results are available on DiveMeets.com.
