Kyle Garland On Pace For Record-Shattering Heptathlon

January 26, 2023 | Track & Field

LUBBOCK, Texas --- Bulldog senior Kyle Garland is ahead of both the collegiate and world records in the heptathlon as a pair of Lady Bulldogs completed the pentathlon and a Bulldog duo knocked out four of seven heptathlon events at the Texas Tech Open & Multis on Thursday.

Garland, a native of Philadelphia, Pa., posted combined event personal records in all four of his events (60-meter dash, long jump, shot put, high jump) to jump out to a 241-point lead in the heptathlon.  Last year's NCAA runner-up and Southeastern Conference champion tallied 3,732 points.

Garland is 171 points ahead of where the collegiate record (6,499 points) holder, Ashton Eaton, was after day one in 2010.  The Bulldog standout is also 78 points ahead of where Eaton was two years later when the former Oregon Duck set the world record (6,645).

Freshmen Ella Rush and Leah Anderson also completed their first collegiate pentathlons.  In fact, this marked the first pentathlon in history for Anderson.  Rush shot to No. 10 in the school record books after scoring 4,100 points for third place.  Anderson secured a mark in four of five events and was 17th (2,727).

When Do The Bulldogs Start Friday: Garland will conclude his final three heptathlon events (60m hurdles, pole vault, 1000m) on Friday beginning at 12 p.m. ET

In the open events, Alon Rogow (men's pole vault) and Mikeisha Welcome (women's long jump) are the first Bulldogs to compete on Friday at 4 p.m.

Garland won his third event in a row after his second shot put attempt measured a personal best 16.26m/53-4.25.  Those 867 points pushed him into a 99-point lead headed into the fourth and final event of the day.

Thanks to five clearances in the high jump, Garland also won the fourth event to establish his firm lead in the hep.  After cleanly clearing 2.13m/6-11.75 on his third and final try, Garland reached a career-best height of 2.19m/7-2.25 on his opening attempt to add another 982 points.  This marked bettered his No. 10 spot in the school record books.

Rush opened with a mark of 6.07m/19-11 to take second place in the long jump before fouling on her second and third tries to move into fifth place.  Anderson closed her series with a mark of 5.72m/18-9.25 to take 10th in the event.
