Georgia Falls to No. 8 South Carolina, 1-0
September 22, 2022 | Soccer
ATHENS, Ga. – A goal in the 82nd minute powered South Carolina to a 1-0 win over the University of Georgia soccer team Thursday evening before 1,462 spectators at the Turner Soccer Complex.
No. 8 South Carolina (6-1-3, 1-1-0 SEC) earned the lone goal of the night as Payton Patrick netted a shot past Georgia goalkeeper Liz Beardsley. The Gamecocks outshot the Bulldogs (7-3, 1-1-0 SEC) by a thin 13-11 margin with each team putting up six in the second half. South Carolina marked five shots on goal to Georgia's one.
"It did come down to moments," Georgia head coach Keidane McAlpine said following the match. "Unfortunately, as we are new to this team, we are still getting used to what I want and what the staff wants out of every moment. It's just going to be experience, but we've got more to go to win this type of game when it's that tough and the margins are so small. We had our moments. We didn't take ours, and they took their one. That was the game."
Beardsley posted three saves in the first half to keep the scoreboard blank as neither team broke the stalemate before the half. Beardsley eventually tallied four saves in the 90 minutes of play.
To start the second half, a shot from Patrick snuck past Beardsley, but after review, the goal was called back due to a handball to keep the match scoreless. Patrick eventually found the back of the net in the 82nd minute. A ball passed off the head of a Georgia defender connected with Patrick to put the Gamecocks up, 1-0.
Georgia will return to the pitch on Sunday in Gainesville, Fla. to take on Florida at noon. The match will air on ESPNU. The Bulldogs will return to the Turner Soccer Complex on Friday, Sept. 30 to face No. 6 Alabama at 6 p.m. The match will be streamed on SEC Network+.
