Black Team Wins Annual Red and Black Scrimmage
September 17, 2022 | Equestrian
BISHOP, Ga. ---  The University of Georgia equestrian team held its Annual Red and Black Scrimmage on Saturday at the UGA Equestrian Complex.  The Black Team was victorious with a final score of 9-8. Â
Â
Most Outstanding Performer honors were awarded to sophomore Melissa Deryn Foster (Fences), freshman Hailey Royce (Flat), junior Savannah Relick (Horsemanship), and junior Hannah Jane Lucas (Reining).Â
Â
"Anytime you get to come out and compete on a gorgeous day like today is pretty special," head coach Meghan Boenig said. "The energy we had was incredible. It's been years since we've started out with this much energy and passion, want and desire. I am so impressed with some of these scores that we are seeing coming out of first-time riders, first-time in this format,  and many of them the first time they have ever ridden on this particular mount. Our goal is to take good to great and be that in everything, and I think today exemplifies that."Â
Â
The scrimmage started with Horsemanship.  With three riders for each squad, the Black Team took a 2-1 lead.  Junior Savannah Relick put the Black Tam on the board with a score of 72.5. Sophomore Austin Layer earned a point for the Red Team before freshman Alyvia Dixon finished with a point for Black after riding to a score of 70.5.
Â
Meanwhile in Fences, the Red Team edged the Black Team, 3-2.  Junior Jennifer Staniloff won the first Jumping Seat point with a score of 85.  Freshman Hailey Royce scored an 83 to add another point for Red. Sophomore Melissa Deryn Foster claimed a point for the Black Team after scoring an 87.  Freshman Aphrodite Papandreou earned a score of 84 and a point for the Red Team, before the event concluded with a point for the Black Team from freshman Ella Duffy. Â
Â
The scrimmage was tied at four points each after two events. Â
Â
Competition continued in Reining with the Black Team taking three points to one.  Junior Hannah Jane Lucas grabbed the lone point for the Red Team and earned MOP honors for her ride.  Freshmen Raegan Shepherd and Shelby Lynch both won their rides, before junior Sophie Lucas finished with another point for the Black Team. Â
Â
In Flat, the Red Team tightened the gap with a 3-2 advantage.  Junior Jennifer Staniloff won the first point for the Red Team with a score of 82.  Black took the next two points with rides from junior Emma Reichow and freshman Ella Duffy.  Sophomore Catalina Peralta and freshman Hailey Royce concluded competition with two more points for the Red Team. Â
Â
The 2022-23 season officially begins on September 30 against Baylor.  The meet is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the UGA Equestrian Complex.  Admission is free.Â
