June 25, 2022 | Track & Field
EUGENE, Ore. --- Georgia's Elija Godwin advanced to the 400-meter dash final and Eddiyah Frye punched her ticket to the World Under-20 Championships to highlight the second day of the USATF Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., late Friday.
Godwin, a native of Covington, Ga., won his heat and clocked the third-fastest time in the 400m semifinal (44.66) to advance to Friday's final at 5:31 p.m. ET.
Frye, a native of Miami Gardens, Fla., raced in the Under-20 portion of the meet in Oregon and finished second in the 100m hurdle final. After registering the second-fastest time of the first round with a 13.54, Frye ran the eighth-best time in school history (13.26) to earn a silver medal and punch her ticket to World Athletics U-20 Championships in Santiago de Cali, Colombia, on Aug. 1-6.
During action at the Brazilian National Championships this week, junior Ana da Silva won the shot put after reaching 17.47 meters/57 feet, 3 ¾ inches.
Also of note, junior Matthew Boling opened with a mark of 7.78/25-6.25 in the long jump and finished 12th at the USATF Outdoor Championships.
The USATF Championships run Thursday through Sunday while the USATF U-20 Championships are slated for Thursday through Saturday.
On Saturday, graduate transfer Julia Harisay (javelin – 2:30 p.m.), Boling (200m – 2:45 p.m.), senior Titiana Marsh (triple jump – 3:30 p.m.) and senior Darius Carbin (high jump – 3:25 p.m.) will all compete as the final Bulldogs in the field.
The top three finishers in each event at the USATF Championships advance to the World Athletics Championships, which will also be at Oregon's Hayward Field on July 15-24. However, hitting the qualifying standard is also necessary to advance to Worlds. So far, Godwin in the 400m and Boling in the 200m have the necessary marks in their events.
Junior Kyle Garland has already punched his ticket to the World Championships after earning a silver medal in the decathlon at the USATF Combined Events Championships in May. During that meet at the University of Arkansas, The Bowerman semifinalist and NCAA bronze medal winner exploded for a collegiate record 8,720 points, which is well above the qualifying standard score, and finished behind former Bulldog Garrett Scantling.
In addition, the following Bulldogs are also battling for a spot at the World Championships during their own country's national championships this week: Estonia's Johannes Erm (decathlon), Brazil's Alencar Pereira (hammer throw), Delano Dunkley (sprints).
