Da Silva Tallies School Record, Title To Highlight Day At SECs
May 14, 2022 | Track & Field
OXFORD, Miss. --- Lady Bulldog junior Ana da Silva heaved her final attempt in the shot put to secure the title and top her own UGA record, highlighting day two of the Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championships in Oxford, Miss., on Friday.
Da Silva, a native of Ribeirao das Neves, Brazil, surpassed her own school record with a second throw of 17.59 meters/57 feet, 8 ½ inches. Then, she overtook the event leaders on her sixth and final toss to capture the Lady Bulldogs' first SEC title in the shot put since 2000.
Another conference crown came from senior Johannes Erm in the decathlon. Skipping his formal graduation ceremony, Erm complemented his 2018-19 SEC indoor heptathlon championships by winning his first conference decathlon title with 8,132 points.
While Erm finished third at the 2018 NCAA Outdoor Championships and won the 2019 Nationals, this marks his first SEC decathlon competition. This also marks Georgia's seventh SEC decathlon title in history, including Kyle Garland's crown in 2021.
The day began by having a planned start time 2:45 p.m. ET. However, the meet did not start until 8 p.m. because of successive lightning and rain delays.
Additional Friday scorers for the Bulldogs included: Elena Kulichenko – w. high jump, T-4th; Shelby Tyler – w. high jump, 6th; Titiana Marsh – w. long jump.
On Thursday, a pair of Georgia throwers struck silver to tally a quick 16 points. Senior Alencar Pereira made a five-spot improvement from his 2021 finish at SECs to earn a silver medal in the hammer throw. Then senior Ahmed Magour fired out of the gate on his opening javelin throw to earn runner-up honors at his first conference meet.
Other Georgia scorers on Thursday included: Julia Harisay – w. javelin, 4th; Elsie Igberaese – w. hammer throw, 5th; Sam Bowers – m. 10,000 meters, 8th.
The Lady Bulldogs are currently in fourth with 27.5 points with Auburn (36), Florida (32) and Texas A&M (28) making up the top three. The Georgia men have 27 points and are also in fourth with Tennessee (55), Alabama (54) and Arkansas (45) rounding out the top three.
The Bulldog accumulated three qualifiers for Saturday's finals on day two. Senior Anna Marian Block celebrated her graduation day by running the fastest 1500m time of her career to advance. Senior Elija Godwin came out of the pack in the lead on the final straightaway and refused to relinquish it to automatically qualify from his heat. Also in the sprints, Godwin's relay partner, junior Matthew Boling, punched his ticket in a second event (100m) after flying to a 10.36 to take second in his heat and fifth overall.
During the opening day of action, Georgia had four competitors punch their tickets to event finals. Senior Clay Pender, a product of Winder, Ga., ran the sixth-fastest 800m time in school history and best since 2016 to qualify for the final. Boling made short work of the 200m prelims by qualifying automatically thanks to winning with a facility record 20.24. Another pair of Bulldog qualifiers came out of the men's 400m hurdles. Freshman Bryce McCray sped to the sixth-best time in UGA history with a 50.21 and junior Caleb Cavanaugh was right behind his teammate and training partner with a 50.34.
