LSU Takes Game One of Series, 8-1

April 22, 2022 | Softball

ATHENS, Ga. – No. 14/13 Georgia softball fell in game one of its series to No. 21 LSU Friday evening at Jack Turner Stadium, 8-1.

The loss is only Georgia's 10th of the season and is now 36-10 and 9-7 in SEC play. This is also Georgia's first game one loss of SEC play, having won the first five series openers.

The offense was limited to four hits in the contest from four different Bulldogs. Sophomore Jayda Kearney provided the big hit, knocking a solo home run in the sixth inning.

Madison Kerpics (16-4) suffered the loss in the circle, allowing five runs to the Tigers. She fanned two LSU hitters in her five-inning start. Britton Rogers worked two innings out of the pen for Georgia Friday.

LSU (29-16, 9-7) broke through in the top of the third with a two-out, two-RBI single back up the middle off the bat of Shelbi Sunseri to go ahead 2-0.

The Tigers loaded the bases with one out in the top of the fifth. McKenzie Redoutey cleared the bases with a double to left, widening the Tigers' lead to 5-0.

A pair of solo home runs in the top of the sixth extended LSU's lead to 7-0.

Kearney broke up the shutout with a solo home run shot down the left field line in the home half of the sixth, 7-1. It was Kearney's 11th home run of the season.

A bases-loaded walk in the top of the seventh brought the final tally to 8-1 in favor of the Tigers.

Game two of the series is set for 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon at Jack Turner Stadium. The game will air live in front of a nationally televised audience on ESPNU. Former head coach Lu Harris-Champer will be honored prior to first pitch.

Head Coach Tony Baldwin
On tonight's pregame message...
"It was clearly not effective enough, whatever it was. At the end of the day, what I wanted our team to do was go play free and go get after it. When the opportunities were there, go for it. All in all, I thought we did that okay tonight, but I don't think we won enough of the moments. Whether it was in the batter's box, when we had opportunities early in the game with some runners in scoring positions, and we didn't win enough at bats. We had our defense to make plays to get us off the field, and we didn't make them. I don't think anything was a lack of effort or going for it. We just came up short on those sorts of moments tonight, and when you're playing those sorts of teams, if you win those moments, you get on top of the game, and if you don't, you get behind that game. That's what happened tonight. The score is what it is. I think early in the game we had a chance to change the momentum, and then you're looking at a very different game. It's disappointing with the outcome, disappointing with the moments that we didn't win, but we'll regroup, come back tomorrow, and see if we can't go get out on top and honor Lu [Harris-Champer] with a great performance."

On the game plan for game two of the series tomorrow…
"Win those moments. There's not a magic technique or approach. We've got to win a few more of those moments. Make the plays, make the pitches, and win a few more at bats."
