Big First Inning Propels Georgia to 16-9 Win Over LSU
April 23, 2022 | Softball
The Bulldogs climb to 37-10 on the season and 10-7 in SEC play.
Legendary head coach Lu Harris-Champer was honored pregame, and she threw out a ceremonial first pitch in front of a home crowd of 1,533.
Junior Sara Mosley made history in the game, going 5-for-5 at the plate, hitting all singles. She becomes the first Bulldog since Kim Wendland did it on March 9, 2004, against Western Illinois. Mosley scored twice and drove in two.
The Bulldogs scattered 18 total hits including three home runs. Sydney Kuma tied a career-best three hits with four RBI while Jaiden Fields picked up two hits and four RBI. Lacey Fincher and Aniyah Black also had two hits in the game.
Britton Rogers (10-1) earned the victory in the circle, working four and two-thirds, allowing one run and striking out a couple. Lauren Mathis worked a total of an inning and two-thirds in her start. Riley Orcutt and Kylie Macy also appeared out of the pen.
A three-run home run off the bat of Georgia Clark put LSU (29-17, 9-8) ahead 3-0 in the opening frame.
The Bulldogs responded in a big way in the bottom of the inning, sending 14 hitters to the plate and scoring 12 runs on 10 hits. Georgia loaded the bases then three-straight RBI hits from Jayda Kearney, Fields, and Black tied the game at 3-3. Mackenzie Puckett delivered the go-ahead hit, a two-RBI base hit to right. The Bulldogs broke the game open with a three-run home run from Kuma, and two-run home runs from Fincher and Fields to bring the inning tally to 12 runs.
Mosley's third hit of the game came in the form of an RBI single in the bottom of the second to drive in CJ Landrum and make it a 10-run game, 13-3.
LSU drew five bases-loaded walks in the top of the third to cut Georgia's lead to 13-8. The Tigers knocked a solo home run in the top of the fourth to make it a four-run game, 13-9.
Fields' fourth RBI came on a sac fly out to right, plating Kuma and bringing the lead back to five, 14-9.
Georgia added two more in the home half of the sixth. With two in scoring position, Kuma drove in Black with a single to center. Mosley then plated Kuma on a single to center, recording hit number five of the game and widening the lead to 16-9.
Rogers retired the Tigers in order in the seventh to secure the win.
The rubber game of the series is set for Sunday at noon, ET, live on ESPNU from Jack Turner Stadium.
Head Coach Tony Baldwin
On how his team responded after the loss yesterday…
"When we went back and watched the tape last night, I thought that we got some good pitches to hit. All in all, we put some pretty good swings on the ball, just a little bit late, a little bit early, and little low. They talk about sometimes that these games are games of inches, but those inches matter. Today, just to come out and compete and be present and go for it, really proud of the way we did that. I'm equally as proud as the way we responded when things got kind of sideways there in the middle of the game and just kept fighting the fight. Again, we get to choose how we feel and how we behave, and I thought we made really good choices in that. That's what allowed us to keep fighting the fight and ultimately pull out the game."
On the pitching today and if it changes anything tomorrow…
"We'll go back, and we'll talk. I've got a pretty good idea what we'll go with tomorrow. The crazy thing is, all in all, I thought we pitched pretty well except for that one inning, which was kind of a disaster. Riley [Orcutt] came in and struck out the batter to win the inning in the second. That was big time. I couldn't be prouder of her for coming in in that moment and executing the pitches. The next inning, sometimes the harder you try and throw strikes – everyone says just throw strikes. Well, they were trying. It just wasn't happening. At the end of the day, I thought Britton [Rogers] really came in in a crazy situation and stabilized things and pitched well at the end. Hopefully, we can go back out there and be in a good place and control the ball from the circle tomorrow and have another good day at the plate."
On Sara Mosley, Sydney Kuma, and Jaiden Fields…
"What I'm proud of is their ability to just be consistent. One of the things that we say a lot is, 'Consistent thinkers perform consistently.' They've been able to take good days and bad days and process them and just move forward and do their thing again the next day. Sometimes, recovering from success can be just as hard as recovering from failure. You do something well, and you want so badly to do it again, but that's not how it works. You just have to go compete and put your stuff out there. When you're in that place, the outcomes usually take care of themselves. That's what they've been doing well is just how they've been thinking."
Junior Sara Mosley
On the team's approach after struggling yesterday…
"I don't think our mental state was really in it yesterday, but today Coach Tony [Baldwin] just came out and told us to compete. That's all he told us to do is compete, compete, compete. I think we worked our butt off and got what we wanted."
On being the first Georgia player to have five hits since 2004…
"I'm just having fun. I'm just out here doing my thing and playing Georgia softball. I can't do it without my teammates cheering me on. It's awesome just to be out here and play Georgia softball. This is my dream at my dream school playing, and it couldn't be more fun."
