Bulldogs Open NCAAs with Pair of All-American Relays
March 16, 2022 | Swimming & Diving
ATLANTA – Highlighted by a furious comeback in the 800 freestyle relay, the University of Georgia women's swimming and diving team opened the 2022 NCAA Women's Championships in spectacular fashion Wednesday evening at the McAuley Aquatic Center.
Sophomore Maxine Parker, freshman Duné Coetzee, senior Callie Dickinson, and junior Zoie Hartman finished fifth in the 800 free relay with a season-best time of 6:56.58, earning First Team All-America honors and dropping nearly five seconds from their seed time. Despite Parker led off the relay with a personal-best 200 free split of 1:44.24, the Bulldogs trailed Florida and Louisville by almost two seconds heading into the final leg. However, Hartman was able to close the gap with a remarkable 1:42.37, leading the Bulldogs to a heat-winning time.
Earlier in the evening, the 200 medley relay team of freshmen Eboni McCarty and Angharad Evans and seniors Dakota Luther and Gabi Fa'amausili also earned All-America status with a 14th-place time of 1:35.94, moving up seven spots from their pre-meet No. 21 seed. The mark finished second in the opening heat and ranks fourth all-time in program history. McCarty led off the medley with a personal-best 50 backstroke time of 23.94, while Fa'amausili closed with a 21.92 on the 50 freestyle leg.
Through one night of competition, Georgia is tied with SEC rival Tennessee for ninth overall with 34 points. Defending national champion Virginia leads with 74 points, followed by Texas (58) and California (56).
The NCAA Championships kick into full gear Thursday with the first four individual events (500 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 freestyle, 1-meter diving) of the meet, as well as the 200 freestyle relay. Hartman looks to improve upon her second-place finish in the IM at last year's NCAAs, while freshman Abby McCulloh is seeded 13th in the 500 free. At the diving well, sophomore Meghan Wenzel will make her NCAA debut on the 1-meter.
The prelims session begins at 10 a.m., followed by the diving trials at 12:30 p.m. and finals at 6 p.m. Live coverage will be available on ESPN3 with live results available on the NCAA Championship Central page and to paid subscribers on the MeetMobile app.
