MESA, Ariz. — Caterina Don fired a 3-under 69 in Saturday's second round of the Clover Cup, pushing the Georgia junior to fifth place overall at 4-under 140 entering Sunday's final round at Longbow Golf Club.
The No. 28-ranked Bulldogs got hot late to rally to a 4-over 292 and are in eighth place at 7-over 583. Georgia played its final five holes at a combined 9-under as a team on Saturday.
"I'm really proud of them, and I think we might have just turned the corner," head coach Josh Brewer said. "We certainly haven't played our best this spring, but we've been grinding and working hard. Today was the first sign in a long time of all that hard working paying off. That last hour of golf today was really fun, and I really think it will propel us going forward for the rest of the spring. I think we really started to see where we are headed, and it was fun."
The Bulldogs struggled on the front half of the layout and turned at 6-over as a team. The tally bulged to more than twice that balance before Georgia got hot down the stretch.
Don and Jenny Bae, who shot 1-under 71, posted their second-consecutive par-or-better loops on Longbow. Don now has 10 scores at even or better in 22 rounds this season, while Bae has eight in 18.
"Caterina and Jenny are playing like you think they would," Brewer said. " They are the two faces of our program, and they are playing like everyone knows they're capable of playing. The others are really just a touch off. It might look like they're way off, but I'm confident they are really close to putting it all together."
The Bulldogs also counted a 75 from Jo Hua Hung and a 77 from Caroline Craig.
Trailing Don in fifth, Bae is tied for 13th at 1-under 143, Hung is tied for 37th at 148, Craig is 56th at 152 and Isabella Holpfer, who shot 79 on Saturday, is tied for 74th at 157.
Don began her day with five pars before a birdie at No. 6. She gave that stroke back with a bogey at No. 8 but rallied into the red again with a birdie at No. 9. Don was still 1-under through 14 holes but birdied No. 15 and No. 18 to trim two more shots.
Bae's steady day put her at 2-over through 14, with bogeys at No. 4 and No. 10. She birdied three of her final four holes to move under-par.
LSU is atop both leaderboards. Ingrid Lindblad's 9-under score is two shots better than the field. The No. 17-ranked Tigers are at 8-under 568 as a team, two shots ahead of Clemson.
Georgia will be paired with New Mexico and Oklahoma on Sunday. The Bulldogs, Lobos and Sooners will open play on holes Nos. 7-9 with a 10:00 a.m. ET shotgun start. Live scoring is available online at www.golfstat.com.
