GymDogs Finish Second at the Kentucky Quad-Meet

LEXINGTON, Ky. ---Â The University of Georgia gymnastics team scored a season-best 196.125 at the Kentucky Quad-Meet in Memorial Coliseum on Friday night.Â
Â
Kentucky finished first with a 197.450.  Behind Georgia it was Illinois with a 195.650 and then Central Michigan with a 195.550.Â

"I'm really proud of the team tonight," Georgia head coach Courtney Kupets Carter said.  "We are continuing to improve and this was a great step, especially on the road.  We are not there yet, but I am very pleased with the progress and know that will continue."

Georgia started with lots of energy on floor, posting a 49.250- the team's second-best score of the season. Rachel Baumann led the charge with a 9.900 for her routine and Megan Roberts followed with a 9.875, a season-high that matches her career best.  Alyssa Perez-Lugones received a 9.850 and Haley de Jong notched a season-high 9.825 for her performance. Â

Kentucky started on vault, matching Georgia's score in the first rotation. Â

Moving on to vault, the GymDogs showed power, collectively scoring a 49.000 for the event. Baumann and Abbey Ward paced the team with scores of 9.850, while Soraya Hawthorne and Mikayla Magee both contributed a 9.800.Â

Competition continued for the GymDogs on bars, scoring a 49.075. Sophomore Katie Finnegan earned the high score of the event for Georgia, swinging to a career-high 9.900. Roberts followed with a 9.850 and de Jong received a 9.825. Returning to the lineup for the first time this season, sophomore Victoria Nguyen scored a 9.775. Â

The GymDogs were in second behind Kentucky with a score of 148.000-147.325 heading into the final rotation. Â

Georgia finished the night on beam, showing continued improvement and posting a 48.800. De Jong led the event with a 9.875, followed by a 9.850 from Baumann.  Freshman Sarah Cohen and fifth-year senior Emily Schild both scored a 9.775. Â

Georgia is on the road again next week as the team travels to Tuscaloosa to face Alabama on Friday, February 11 at 7:30 p.m. The meet with be broadcast on the SEC Network. Â
