Four Bulldogs Take Home First-Place Honors to Highlight Carolina Indoor Open

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Four Bulldogs took first-place honors and junior Ana da Silva set a school record in the shot put at the Carolina Indoor Open in Columbia, S.C.

The Lowdown: A majority of the action on Friday came for Georgia on the field side of the Carolina Indoor Open. In women's shot put action, da Silva took set a school record with a throw of 17.19 meters (56 feet, 4 3/4 inches) on her third attempt. This topped Hilenn James' school record of 17.03m (55-10.50) set at the 2013 NCAA Indoor Championships. Da Silva finished the weekend ranked 10th nationally this season with the second-best performance of the weekend across the country. Redshirt sophomore Mia Anderson came in third at 14.34m (47-0.75) with what also was a personal best.
The day began with redshirt sophomore Elsie Igberaese and Anderson taking third and fourth in the women's weight throw. Igberaese finished third with a distance of 17.66m (57-11.50), while Anderson took fourth with a throw of 16.89m (55-5).
Sophomore Gavin Beverage took home top honors for the Bulldogs in the men's shot put. The sophomore won with a throw of 18.10m (59-4.75). He was followed by senior Titiana Marsh who also captured a win in the women's long jump. Marsh traveled 6.12m (20-1) in her final tune-up before the postseason.
In the men's weight throw, junior Alencar Pereira finished second with a throw of 20.80m (68-3) and was the top collegiate competitor, while graduate transfer Ty Kunzman set a season best with a distance of 18.86m (61-10.50). Kunzman's throw situated him fourth.
On the track, junior Anna Marian Block won the women's 800 meter run with a time of 2:06.78. In the 200m, junior Destiny Jackson took recorded a 10th place finish with a 24.31. On the men's side, freshman Bryce McCray finished second in the 400m dash with a time of 47.76.
Where Does The Indoor Season Take The Dogs: The Bulldogs are slated to travel to College Station, Texas, for the SEC Indoor Championships on Feb. 25-26. Then, Georgia will make their way to Birmingham, Ala., on March 11-12 for the NCAA Indoor Championships. The outdoor season cranks up one week later, In Atlanta.
