December 21, 2022 | Track & Field
ATHENS, Ga. --- The members of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) have voted Bulldog men and women's head coach Caryl Smith Gilbert president through the next three academic years beginning summer 2023.
Â
Smith Gilbert, who is set to start her second indoor season with the Bulldogs in January, will lead the Board of Directors and take over the spot previously filled by Leroy Burrell (currently of Auburn).  The election was held during the opening session of the 2022 USTFCCCA Convention in Aurora, Colo., last week.
"I am honored to be chosen by my peers and colleagues for this very important position," said Smith Gilbert.  "Collegiate track and field is going through some transition right now in terms of our global platform.  NCAA track and field and cross country is a springboard for much of the top talent in the world, and I look forward to collaborating with my colleagues and with outside governing bodies to continue to progress these sports."
Smith Gilbert guided the Bulldog men to a fifth-place finish at the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Championships after leading them to eighth place at last year's indoor Nationals.  Before becoming the first female head coach of a men's sports program in UGA history in June 2021, Smith Gilbert led the Southern California women's team to two team outdoor national championships in three years between 2019-21.  The USC men posted four top-five finishes during her the last seven championships of her tenure.
The Bulldogs begin their indoor season at the Clemson Invite on Jan. 13-14, 2023.  The outdoor season is slated to start the outdoor season in Atlanta at the Yellow Jacket Invitational on March 17-18.
