Quinn Earns Top Spot in ITA Fall Singles Rankings

ATHENS, Ga. – The Georgia men's tennis team was well represented in the final edition of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division I fall rankings, with five athletes featured in the singles rankings, led by No. 1 Ethan Quinn, and a pair of tandems in the doubles poll.
Joined by redshirt freshman Quinn in the top 10 is No. 10 Philip Henning. The Bulldogs put five players in the singles rankings in total, rounded out by No. 21 Blake Croyder, No. 70 Teodor Giusca and No. 106 Trent Bryde. Doubles is led by 19th-ranked Bryde and Quinn, followed by No. 55 Croyder and Britton Johnston.
In all, Georgia men's tennis had a phenomenal fall season, winning four championships across three events. Quinn captured singles titles at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships and the ITA All-American Championships, Croyder won the singles championships at the ITA Southeast Regional and Croyder and Johnston won the doubles title at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships.
"The fall season rankings aren't our final goal, but the representation we have in there is a product of how hard we've worked so far," said head coach Manny Diaz. "We have a long spring ahead of us. Our guys are committed to continuing to work hard, to motivate each other and to push each other. That's our main focus right now."
Top-ranked Quinn has had an astonishing start to his collegiate career, highlighted by winning the ITA All-American Championship singles title in October, defeating teammate No. 10 Henning. The Fresno, Calif. native finished the fall season 9-0 with eight ranked wins, including two wins over the current No. 3 player and victories against the No. 9, 12, and 31 players, as well as the top-ranked player to start the fall season.
Henning also had a strong start to his final season in the Red and Black. The No. 10 player posted a 6-2 fall record and advanced to the ITA All-American Championships singles title match, with three of his five wins coming in three-set matches, before falling to Quinn. In addition, the senior earned a win at the ITA Fall Nationals event against No. 40 Matisse Bobichon, 6-2, 6-4.
Roswell, Ga. native No. 21 Croyder had an impressive fall season that saw him win the ITA Southeast Regional against FSU's No. 12 Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc, who was the top-ranked newcomer in the 2021 ITA rankings. By winning the event, Croyder earned a spot at the prestigious ITA Fall Nationals event in San Diego, Calif. The senior heads into the spring with a 9-4 record.
In his Bulldog debut this fall, No. 70 Giusca picked up eight wins with two against ranked competition. The senior made it to the final round of the qualifying at the ITA All-American Championship and the quarterfinals of the ITA Southeast Regional. Senior No. 106 Bryde earned four wins and one against a nationally ranked opponent heading into the dual match season.
19th-ranked Bryde and Quinn picked up three wins against an incredibly difficult schedule in the fall season, with five of their six opponents being ranked in the top 25 of the latest ITA doubles rankings. The Bulldogs made it to the quarterfinal round of the main draw at the ITA All-American Championships, falling to current No. T-7 Cleeve Harper/Eliot Spizzirri, whom they beat in their first match together at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships.
The winners of the doubles title at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships are also represented in the doubles poll, No. 55 Croyder and Johnston. The pair went 3-0 in the Athens-based event, capped off by a win against the former No. 36 Peter Makk and Lodewijk Weststrate of Southern California. The seniors also made it to the quarterfinal round of the ITA Southeast Regional.
The Bulldogs will next be in action at the start of the 2023 spring dual season, with the team's first match coming against the Florida State Seminoles in Tallahassee, Fla. on January 15, 2023.
