Henning, Quinn Win Semifinal Matches For All-Bulldog Final in ITA All-Americans

October 08, 2022 | Men's Tennis

TULSA, Okla. – For the first time since 1996, two teammates will be facing one another in the finals of the men's singles main draw at Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American Championship, as Georgia's Philip Henning and Ethan Quinn won their respective semifinal matches at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on Saturday morning and advanced to the finals.

Quinn defeated Texas' Spizzirri 7-5, 6-1, while Henning won his semifinal match against Stanford's Max Basing 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.

The senior, Henning, and redshirt freshman, Quinn, will face off tomorrow for the title tomorrow at 11 a.m. ET. Georgia will have its sixth ITA All-American Singles Champion after the match goes final, tying Stanford for most in the tournament's history.

"So extremely proud of our Bulldogs," said head coach Manny Diaz. "Ethan was on point today and executed his game to perfection. Philip played an exceptional match against a very good opponent from Stanford. Their match was at an incredible level and very physical.  I am very impressed with both of our players as they continue to work hard and improve leading the way for our squad. It is very infrequent seeing two players from the same school in the finals, so I will sit back and enjoy watching tomorrow."

With two players in the finals, it marks the first time a Bulldog played for the singles title since Wil Spencer fell to Mitchell Frank in 2011. After tomorrow's match goes final, it will be the first time a Georgia athlete has won the event since Travis Helgeson did so in 2007.

Quinn and Spizzirri, who previously met at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships at the Magill Tennis Complex on September 16, played their semifinal match on court one at 11 a.m. The opening set was a battle, with both athletes playing high-level tennis. While tied at five-games all, Quinn was able to break Spizzirri's serve and then use his own serve, closing out the set and winning it by a 7-5 score.

The second set was all Quinn, as he managed to swiftly defeat his opponent, 6-1, to earn his second win over Spizzirri in singles in three weeks.

Henning also opened his match against Basing, the No. 10 Newcomer in the 2021 ITA Preseason Rankings and the current 40th-ranked singles player, at 11 a.m. on court two.

Their first set began with the Georgia senior down 5-1 but winning four games in a row to tie it at five. Despite his comeback efforts, the Stanford sophomore took the opening set, 7-5.

The second set was yet another battle, but Henning came out on top of it. While tied at four games all, the Bloemfontein, South Africa native managed to break Basing's serve and then serve to win the second set, 6-4.

Henning then raced out to a 5-1 lead in the third set. Basing, however, put the pressure on by winning two-straight games and leading 30-love while serving. Henning responded, forcing deuce point and winning the match after Basing's return from his backhand sailed out.

Both Henning and Quinn are flawless to open their fall season. Henning has opened the year 5-0, making his debut in this tournament, while Quinn is 8-0, having previously won all three singles matches at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships.
