Two Bulldogs Reach Semifinal Round in Singles at ITA All-American Championships

October 07, 2022 | Men's Tennis

TULSA, Okla. – Philip Henning and Ethan Quinn have advanced to the semifinal round of the singles main draw in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American Championships at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on Friday, as the two each won their respective round of 16 and quarterfinal round matches.

Trent Bryde and Quinn's doubles run ended in the quarterfinal round as the tandem fell to Cleeve Harper and Eliot Spizzirri of Texas 4-6, 6-3, 10-8.

"Could not be more proud of our guys. They are competing at the highest level and playing some great tennis," said head coach Manny Diaz. "We had four great singles wins today along with a great doubles match where we just fell shy of a victory. It's such tough competition here and our guys have already made a statement for themselves. We hope to continue to play at the level we have been competing and aim for the same results tomorrow."

Quinn continued the hot start to his collegiate career with two wins today. He opened the day against Florida State's Cornut-Chauvinc, last year's top-ranked Newcomer in the 2021 ITA Preseason Rankings.

The redshirt freshman dropped his first set of the tournament to start the match in close 6-4 decision. However, Quinn would go on to win the second and third sets in impressive fashion, taking the match after winning sets two and three, 6-3 and 6-2, respectively.

Quinn's quarterfinal match was played just three and a half hours after starting his first one of the day. He took on Ryan Seggerman of North Carolina, who is currently ranked as the 43rd-best singles player in the nation. The Fresno, California native won in straight sets to advance to the semifinal, 6-2, 6-1, and is the only freshman in the field to do so.

Quinn will play Spizzirri of Texas on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. ET for a spot in the finals. The two previous played at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships on September 16, with Quinn winning the match by a 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 score.

Quinn has now started his collegiate career with seven-straight wins in singles. All of his matches have  come against opponents who are ranked within the top-50 of the ITA preseason singles poll. His victories include the top singles player in the country, the No. 15-ranked singles player and now the No. 1 Newcomer in 2021.

Henning began his day in the round of 16 against Virginia's six-seeded Chris Rodesch. The senior came out playing at a high level to clinch a 6-2, 6-3 win over the 2022 ITA All-American in men's singles.

Henning then advanced to the quarterfinals to face his third-straight seeded opponent in No. 9-16 Micah Braswell of Texas. While the two played in two close and competitive sets, the Bloemfontein, South Africa native came out with the straight-set victory, 6-4, 6-4.

This marks the first career quarterfinal and semifinal appearance for Henning, who previously made the round of 16 in 2019. He will face Stanford's Max Basing, a sophomore, on Saturday at 11 a.m. with a spot in the finals on the line.

Bryde and Quinn took the court at 4:30 p.m. for their doubles match against Harper and Spizzirri of Texas. The Red and Black pair opened well, winning the first set in a tightly contested duel by a 6-4 score. The Longhorn tandem, though, responded by taking the second set by a 6-3 result.

This put the match into a tiebreaker, with Harper and Spizzirri opening a lead that Bryde and Quinn were ultimately unable to overcome.

The Bulldog pair now stand at 3-3 to start the year after concluding their run in the tournament, which set a career-best finish in doubles for Bryde after reaching the quarterfinals.
