Bulldogs Go Undefeated in Opening Round of ITA All-American Championships

TULSA, Okla. – The University of Georgia men's tennis team opened play flawlessly in the main draw of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American Championships on Wednesday, with Ethan Quinn and Philip Henning advancing to the Round of 32 in singles and doubles tandem Trent Bryde and Quinn earning a win to make the Round of 16.
"Tremendous day for our guys," said head coach Manny Diaz. "Ethan played at a very high level and Philip showed tremendous resolve in beating an opponent that bested him in this tournament last year. To finish the day, Ethan and Trent fought hard and defeated a very good Ole Miss opponent that led us in the third set tiebreaker. We are looking forward to tomorrow and hoping for another great day."
Quinn kicked off the day for the Bulldogs, winning his Round of 64 match in impressive fashion. The redshirt freshman defeated Illinois' Hunter Heck by a 6-3, 6-1 result and advanced into the next round, where he will next face No. 9-16 Daniel De Jonge of Pepperdine Thursday morning at 10 a.m. ET.
Philip Henning made his fall debut after Quinn's match, where he defeated Michigan's Jacob Bickersteth in a three-set performance, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1. The two met in the Round of 32 last year, where Bickersteth claimed the match also in three sets. Henning's next opponent is No. 9-16 Alex Kotzen of Columbia on Thursday at 2 p.m.
To close out the day, Bryde and Quinn played in their doubles match against in-conference adversary Lukas Engelhardt and Nikola Slavic of Ole Miss. While the Bulldogs start off strong, winning the first set by a 6-1 margin.
However, Engelhardt and Slavic won the second to force a tiebreaker, and even led in the decisive third set. Bryde and Quinn were unphased, however, pushing through and taking the set to improve to 2-2 in the fall season together. The two will take on another Southeastern Conference opponent, Tennessee's No. 5-8 seeded Emile Hudd and Shunsuke Mitsui, tomorrow at 4:30 p.m.
