Condra, Augenstein Lead Dogs At SEC XC Championships
October 28, 2022 | Cross Country
OXFORD, Miss. --- Chase Condra and Sam Bowers were the Bulldog front runners on the men's side while Charlotte Augenstein led the Lady Bulldogs for the second race in a row at the Southeastern Conference Cross Country Championships in Oxford, Miss., on Friday morning.
Team Results & Top Bulldog Finishers: Condra, a Suwannee, Ga., native, was Georgia's top finisher for the first time with Bowers, a Milton, Ga., native, coming in three spots behind him at the Ole Miss Golf Course to help the Bulldog men take ninth in the 8k with 229 points.
Alabama (59 points) edged Tennessee (64), Arkansas (64) and Ole Miss (65) for the men's team title. The Tide's Victor Kiprop won the individual crown after completing the course in 22:39.0.
Augenstein, a native of Albany, Ga., managed a 65th-place finish to lead the Georgia women to 13th-place honors (395 points) in the 6k. Alabama (36) also won the women's crown. Florida's Parker Valby (18:25.87) left with the individual championship on the women's side.
Henner's Take: "I was pretty happy with the men's race today. I thought we made a huge step forward as far as effort and execution and while we aren't there yet, I think if we keep working we will have the potential to make another step forward at Regionals," said Georgia cross country coach Patrick Henner. "The women have been training well and right now are still a little tentative in their races. Charlotte ran very well, probably one of her best collegiate races, so I think all of the team will continue to improve as our training continues."
Henner was especially encouraged by the performances of Condra and sophomore Davis Potts in the men's 8k.
"I thought this was Chase's best collegiate performance, even better than his finish at SECs in 2020, and Davis showed great signs of getting to where we need him to be. The men's team was in the mix with the right teams today, which is exciting for the future."
The Lowdown: The men's race was the second of the day and Condra, who qualified for SEC All-Freshman and Second Team honors in 2020 after taking 12th, was the first Bulldog across the line for the first time in his career. He ran a 24:21.07 to finish three spots in front of Bowers (24:25.28). Bowers, who crept as high as 19th in Friday's race, has now scored in four separate league meets.
Potts scored for the first time in his career thanks to a 24:39.40. His 46th-place showing trimmed 39 spots off of his 2021 finish. The Bulldogs' fourth and fifth finishers crossed the line back-to-back in the 109-man field. Sophomore Cooper Bocko (25:17.01) was 67th to scsore after taking 90th last year and finishing outside the top five. Sophomore KC Heron, who has now scored at two consecutive conference showdowns, took 68th(25:18.10).
The women's race started the morning on Ole Miss' campus with Augenstein leading the Red and Black with a 65th-place showing (21:25.17). Forty-second at the Crimson Classic to be the No. 1 finisher for the Lady Bulldogs two weeks ago, Augenstein made a mammoth improvement to her 2021 finish (112th) to score for the second year in a row after jumping up 14 spots in the last kilometer. Freshman Simone Rojas, who had scored in all four previous meets this year and led the Lady Bulldogs once, ran a 21:51.74 to take 93rd for a scoring spot.
Sophomore Sophia Baker and junior Ellie Hall worked together on Friday to finish 105th and 106th to score for UGA. Baker had a 22:08.85 to score for the second year in a row and better her spot by 16 spots at the midway point in the race. Hall, who scored back in 2019 at the SEC meet, clocked a 22:10.60 for another scoring spot. The fifth and final scorer was freshman Audrey Knoper, who ran a 22:12.47 against 147 other competitors. Knoper was only running in her fourth collegiate race and left as a scorer for the third time.
