Bowers Earns Second All-Region Honor To Highlight NCAA XC South Regional

November 11, 2022 | Cross Country

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. --- Junior Sam Bowers earned the second All-Region honor of his career with a top-20 individual performance at the John Hunt Park in Huntsville, Ala., to highlight the NCAA South Regional on Friday morning.

Team Results & Top Bulldog Finishers: Bowers, a native of Milton, Ga., ran the Bulldogs' first 10k of the season in 30:15.10 to finish 20th out of 188 runners.  The Bulldogs finished ninth with 249 points, matching their 2017 finish.  Tennessee (39 points) grabbed top honors on the men's side with Ole Miss (69) and Alabama (73) filling the next two spots.

Alabama's Victor Kiprop (29:21.20) topped a pair of Tennessee competitors in Yaseen Abdalla (29:28.60) and Dylan Jacobs (29:28.70) for the Regional individual title.

Junior Ellie Hall was the top Lady Bulldogs' finisher at the 6k Regional, taking 67th (21:22.94) in the 231-woman field.  The Georgia women scored 581 points to take 19th as Alabama scored 34 to win and Florida State (88) and Ole Miss (124) finished in the second and third spots.

Florida's Parker Valby (19:17.20) was the first woman across the finish line after registering a 19:17.20. Alabama finished second through fifth with Amaris Tyynismaa (19:35.10) and Hilda Olemomoi (19:35.30) completing the top three.

Henner's Take: "The men had their best race of the year.  Going into the meet, we had a goal of being a top 10 team so finishing ninth was satisfying.  Sam Bowers had a sub-par race at SEC but rebounded well to make All-Region and lead the team.  Chase Condra also had another good race to back up his SEC performance.  Now the challenge is to get mentally and physically stronger and have an elite mentality," said Bulldog first-year cross country coach Patrick Henner.  "Our women had a tough day.  Four of our seven had been sick this past week and that affected us mentally and physically.  Ellie Hall had a really nice performance today and stuck her nose into the race.  I was really happy that she dug down and had her best race at the most important meet.  Audrey (Knoper) also had her best race of the season.  We lined up four freshmen and our upper classmen are not that experienced so our future is bright.  They have had great training all fall that we can build on as we head to indoor and outdoor track."

The Lowdown: Bowers did just as he had in three other races this year and 10 other showdowns in his career and that is be the first Bulldog across the finish line.  He passed 14 runners between the 1500-meter mark and just past 8000m.  Following a ninth-place All-Region performance last year, Bowers again finished in the top 25 to help deliver his team its top finish in five years ago.  Sophomore Chase Condra scored for the first time in his career after completing the course in 30:53.00 for 36th.  He shot past 20 competitors during the 6600m to 8220 stretch.

Sophomore Davis Potts, who scored in 110th in 2021, was the third Bulldog across the line this year.  He ran a 31:02.40 to break into the top 50 after cruising past 15 racers during the middle of the race.  While he competed at last season's Regional, sophomore KC Heron scored this time around at the Regional.  Heron improved his 2021 finish 73 spots to take 79th with a 31:43.30.  Like Potts, Heron had a burst during the middle of the race that left 16 runners behind him.

The fifth scorer in what would be the season finale for Georgia was sophomore Cooper Bocko.  This marked Bocko's second time scoring at the Regional after he was 86th last season.  This year, Bocko finished 95th(32:04.20) after rolling with the same gameplan as his teammates and catching 13 competitors midway through the race.

In the first race of the day, Hall, a native of Marietta, Ga., scored for the sixth straight time and was the team's top finisher for the second time in 2022.  Her 56th-place finish in 2019 was also in the top five for the Lady Bulldogs.  Sophomore Charlotte Augenstein, who led the team in its last two meets, also completed her season by scoring in all six meets.  Augenstein ran a 21:45.97 for 90th after she also scored (135th) last year at the meet.  She improved 39 spots after the 1500m mark.

Freshman Audrey Knoper was the third Lady Bulldog finisher thanks to a 21:58.93 for 158th.  Racing in her fifth collegiate meet, Knoper scored for the fourth time.  Fellow freshman Simone Rojas was next across the line for the Lady Bulldogs, managing a 22:41.06 for 147th.  After leading her teammates at the Live In Lou Classic, Rojas closes out her inaugural season in red and black with six scoring showings.

Sophomore Sophia Baker rounded out the scoring for the Georgia women.  Baker ran a 23:25.99 for 188thafter also scoring in 2021 (137th).
