MEDINAH, Ill. — The Georgia women's golf team compiled a 15-under 561 tally in the first two rounds of the Illini Invitational on Monday. The Bulldogs are sixth place on the team leaderboard after ironically shooting the same total as their 54-hole score to win last year's tournament at Medinah Country Club.
"The leaderboard shows us that you're going to make a lot of birdies if you want to win," head coach Josh Brewer said. "Everyone needs the mindset that they need to shoot 3- or 4-under individually for us to have a chance. You just have to be touch enough to go out there mentally, make birdies and post not only an under-par score but 2-, 3- or 4-under."
Georgia posted a 5-under 283 in the first round before firing a 10-under 278 tally in the second loop of the day. Jenny Bae led Georgia in both rounds, carding matching 5-under 67s that put her at 10-under and in second place on the individual leaderboard. The super senior from Suwanee, Ga., is one stroke back of Alabama's Sarah Edwards.
In the first round, Georgia also counted a trio of even-par 72s from Isabella Holpfer, Jo Hua Hung and Candice Mahé. The Bulldogs remaining second-round counters were a 68 from Hung, a 70 from Caterina Don and Holpfer's 73.
"Jenny is playing great and has a chance to win a tournament tomorrow," Brewer said. "She's had a really special fall so far. Jo played really well this afternoon, and it was good to see Caterina put up her first under-par round of the fall."
Overall, Hung is tied for 23rd at 4-under 140; Don and Holpfer are both tied for 51st at 145, LoraLie Cowart, who is competing as an individual, is tied for 66th at 148; and Mahé is in 72nd at 149.
San Jose State leads the team field at 25-under, a stroke ahead of Kentucky. Rounding out the top-10 teams are Texas Tech and Alabama at 20-under, Auburn at 19-under, the Bulldogs at 15-under, Northwestern at 14-under, Illinois at 13-under and Tennessee and Purdue both at 10-under.
Georgia will be paired with Alabama and Auburn for Tuesday's final round, teeing off on Nos. 4-7 at 10:00 a.m. ET. Live scoring will be available at www.golfstat.com.
