Bad Weather Can’t Stop The Bulldogs

CORAL GABLES, FLA. — Despite having to suspend play for weather the Georgia men's tennis program racked up some impressive wins on the second day of competition of the Miami Invitational.
The dominant doubles tandem of graduate transfers Hamish Stewart and Tristan McCormick have claimed their right as a force to be reckoned with on the court this season with their second consecutive win at the invitational. After being down match point the pair rallied to win 7-6 (7-1) over UCF's Lleyton Cronje and Cooper White.
After being down two match points junior Erik Grevelius and senior Britton Johnston rallied against a pair from No. 3 ranked Texas to notch another doubles win for the Bulldogs. Grevelius and Johnston defeated Micah Braswell and Chih Chi Huang 7-6 (7-3).
The other two doubles matches fell to their opponents on the second day of competition. Freshman duo Mathis Debru and Miguel Perez Peña were defeated by UCF's Kento Yamada and Alan Rubio 6-4. While Seniors Blake Croyder and Trent Bryde fell 6-3 to Miami's Dan Martin and Oren Vasser.
In the morning session of singles freshman and No. 119 nationally-ranked Thomas Paulsell secured his second singles win in straight sets this weekend. Paulsell defeated UCF's Quinn Synder 6-2,6-1. While Johnston fell to Rubio 6-2,6-2 and Debru lost to Yamada 7-5,6-1.
The Georgia Bulldogs were in close battles during the afternoon session of singles on Saturday. However, bad weather rolled into south Florida and play was paused. With no end in sight to the stormy weather the singles play was suspended. The teams will not finish the matches from today and continue onto the third day of competition.
"Two great wins in doubles by Tristan and Hamish for the second day in a row. They were down match point on both days played great tennis under pressure, said head coach Manuel Diaz. "Erik and Britton also were down to Texas two match points and rallied to win. We were battling hard in all singles matches but after two previous rain delays we got some hard rains and had to suspend."
The Bulldogs will be back in action Sunday, Jan. 9 for the final day of the Miami Invitational. Singles will start at approximately 8 a.m. ET with doubles to follow.
