COLUMBIA, Mo. – The No. 13 ranked University of Georgia Lady Bulldogs basketball team defeated the Missouri Tigers, 72-62 on Monday night at Mizzou Arena.
Graduate center Jenna Staiti led all scorers with 22 points and 12 rebounds, marking her 18th double-double in the last 52 games. Graduate guard Que Morrison had 18 points and six rebounds on the night while sophomore guard Sarah Ashlee Barker followed her with 11 points.
Barker went 3-3 from the field and 2-2 from the line in the first quarter. Senior Jordan Isaacs scored nine points, a new season high for the forward.
Georgia improves its record to 14-3 (3-2 SEC) while Missouri drops to 13-5 (2-3 SEC). The Lady Bulldogs' win over the Tigers marks Missouri's first home loss of the season.
"Missouri is a really well coached team, Robin (Pingeton) does a great job," said head coach Joni Taylor. "In the first half, they did a really good job of packing it in the paint and not allowing Jenna (Staiti) to get touches. She finished the half with six points, Que (Morrison) was struggling as well. I thought Jordan Isaacs, Sarah Ashlee Barker, and Mikayla (Coombs) carried us in the first and second quarters when we were struggling. We went into halftime, made some adjustments, and moved some things around, then Jenna and Que carried us in the third and fourth quarters. I thought Zo (Zoesha Smith) played great minutes for us. This was a team effort, I'm really proud of their toughness and fight against a really good Missouri team on the road, in a tough environment."
Georgia's offense came out hot, jumping to an early 9-2 lead off points from Morrison and Barker, who shot perfect in the first quarter. Defensively, Georgia kept Missouri from scoring for four-straight minutes, allowing them to take a 16-7 advantage. Their offensive drive continued, and the Lady Bulldogs ended the first quarter ahead, 23-10.
The Tigers opened the second quarter with a 6-0 run, cutting Georgia's lead to seven points. Barker answered back with a crucial three-point shot to reclaim the Lady Bulldogs' double-digit lead. After five scoreless minutes for the Tigers, they rebounded with 12 points.
Georgia ended the half ahead, 34-31.
The Lady Bulldogs kept their rhythm in the third quarter. Staiti led all players in the with seven points, giving Georgia momentum to stay ahead. The Tigers fought back, but it wasn't enough as the Lady Bulldogs stayed on top, 49-44.
Missouri saw a 6-2 run early in the fourth quarter, drawing the game to a one-point difference. A Staiti layup and-one would be the spark the Lady Bulldogs needed. Staiti and Morrison scored seven-straight points pulling back ahead, 63-55. Georgia's offense persisted and defeated the Tigers, 72-62.
