Georgia Earns Impressive 6-1 Win In Opener

LAKE NONA, FLA. — In a battle of top-15 teams, the No. 8-ranked Georgia men's tennis squad downed No. 11-ranked UCF, 6-1, for a season-opening win at the USTA National Campus on Monday.
Georgia built an early lead and stayed in control the entire way to improve to 1-0 on the year.
The Bulldogs seized momentum in doubles to claim the point. Georgia's No.21 ranked doubles pair of Philip Henning and Trent Bryde defeated Bogdan Pavel and Lleyton Cronje 6-4 at the top court, before junior Erik Grevelius and senior Blake Croyder defeated Alan Rubio and Yamada 6-3 at No. 3 to secure the point.
The graduate transfer tandem of Tristan McCormick and Hamish Stewart's match against Trey Hilderbrand and JC Roddick was left unfinished at 5-5.
Highlighting singles play was No. 62-ranked Bryde's win over No.16-ranked Trey Hilderbrand. Bryde took down his top-20 ranked opponent on court one in dominant fashion, 6-3,7-6 (7-3).
Three other Georgia Bulldogs won their singles matches in straight sets this afternoon to cap off the victory.
"So impressed with our toughness," said Georgia head coach Manuel Daiz. "UCF is a very good team with tremendous depth and the conditions were very difficult with 30 mph winds. Our guys were physical and tough. We look forward to coming home and playing in front our fans with an opportunity to qualify for National Indoors."
No. 23-ranked Henning defeated UCF's Cronje 6-2,6-1. Cronje, a transfer from VCU was the Atlanta 10 Performer of the Year in the 2020-21 season. McCormick took down Yamada who went 18-1 in singles competition last season in a dominant 7-5,6-3 win. No.110-ranked Croyder defeated Roddick 6-2,7-5.
No.32-ranked Stewart's endurance was on display in his 6-4,3-6,7-6 (7-0) victory over Rubio. Despite winning the first set, freshman Miguel Perez Peña lost to UCF's Pavel 6-4,5-7,4-10.
The Bulldogs will be back in action at home for the ITA Kick-Off Weekend Jan.30-31 hosting VCU, USF and Virginia Tech. Georgia will face VCU on Sunday, Jan. 30 at 2 p.m. ET and will either compete against USF or Virginia Tech on Monday, Jan. 31 at 10 a.m. ET or 2 p.m. ET.
