Paulsell Wins Highlight Intercollegiate Day 2
September 25, 2021 | Men's Tennis
ATHENS, Ga. — The Georgia men's tennis team won three out of four doubles matches and picked up three singles victories — redshirt freshman Thomas Paulsell delivering one of each — on Day 2 of the Southern Intercollegiate Championships Saturday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
The Bulldogs took the court against players from Ohio State and Mercer, earning a combined six victories in singles and doubles in numerous hard-fought matches. Georgia returns to the courts at noon Sunday to face players from USC and Mercer. Texas and Ohio State will play begin play at 8 a.m.
"This is exactly what we want here early in the fall," said associate head coach Jamie Hunt. "We're getting good, competitive matches against great teams. We're getting challenged and we're coming out on top in some and we're taking it on the chin (in others), but this is exactly what we wanted. We've just got to keep looking forward and continue to get better."
Georgia's first win of the day came in doubles, when the duo of Mathis Debru and Britton Johnston defeated Mercer's Lucas Wayenburg/David Georgadze, 8-3. The Bulldog team of Trent Bryde and Philip Henning also picked up win, beating Ohio State's Matej Vocel and JJ Tracy, 8-2.
The Buckeyes picked up their first win of the afternoon session when Robert Cash and Justin Boulais bested Hamish Stewart and Tristan McCormick, 8-4. In the final doubles match, Georgia's Erik Grevelius and Thomas Paulsell beat Mercer's Danny Flynn and Samuel Macleod, 8-4.
In singles, Paulsell picked up Georgia's first of the afternoon when he beat Mercer's Wayenburg, 6-3, 6-4. The Bulldogs also got a win from Grevelius, who beat Ohio State's Lancelot Carnello, 6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-3.
"I was nervous, definitely, at the start because it's like a dream come true playing here," said Paulsell, a redshirt freshman who joined the team in January and is seeing his first action as a Bulldog this weekend.
"I've seen it growing up when I was like 12 years old, watching the videos on YouTube of Georgia tennis. Georgia tennis is like the epitome of college tennis, so it's definitely an honor."
The last match on the court was between Georgia's Bryde, ranked No. 12 in the preseason rankings, and Ohio State's Boulais. Bryde went through some ups and downs in the match but finished with several games of strong, aggressive tennis. Bryde closed out the match with a backhand, crosscourt passing shot to win 6-3, 6-7 (3), 7-5.
"That's what we want to see. Finding ways to win when you're not at your best, it builds character. And he showed a lot of toughness there at the end," Hunt said.
