CHARLESTON, S.C. — The Georgia women's golf team opened its season with a bang on Monday, posting the best single round score in school history en route earning 5-shot lead over the field at the Cougar Classic. The Bulldogs shot 14-under 274 in the second round of a 36-hole day and are at 16-under entering Tuesday's final round at Yeamans Hall Golf Club.
"We know you're not going to shoot 14-under every day," head coach Josh Brewer said. "We knew we had the firepower to play like this and now we've done it. It's a tell-tale sign of the depth we have. We threw out a 71. If you look at really good teams, they have to have five players to play like we did today. We feel like we have 10 players that could help us play like we did today. We're working on a process and not worry about posting a score. The process we're trying to complete went really well today."
Jenny Bae, Caroline Craig and Isabella Holpfer all fired 4-under 68s in the afternoon, and Caterina Don's 2-under 70 rounded out Georgia's counting tallies. The Bulldogs' discarded a 1-under 71 from Jo Hua Hung.
The 274 bettered the existing record by a stroke set in the second round of the 2015 Mason Rudolph Championship.
In the morning, Georgia shot 2-under 286 featuring a career-low, 5-under 67 from Bae, an even-par 72 from Hung, as well as a 73 from Don and a 74 from Holpfer.
"We really just stayed the same for all 36 holes," Brewer said. "Even when we didn't finish well in the morning and shot 2-under, you could just see the focus that they maintained. It was as impressive mentally as it was physically. We spend as much time on wedges and putting as any team in the country. I'm sorry – and I don't know why I'm apologizing for it – but we have wedges in our hands so much and today that paid off big time."
Bae began both rounds at hole No. 4. Her bogey-free first loop included birdies at No. 6, No. 9, No. 13, No. 16 and No. 18. After she moved to 6-under with a birdie at No. 5 early in the second round, Bae posted her first bogey after 22 holes of golf at No. 8. She immediately moved back to 6-under with a birdie at No. 9 and then covered her final dozen holes at 3-under.
Arkansas trails the Bulldogs by five shots at 565. Rounding out the top-10 teams are Florida and UCF at 567, Baylor at 568, North Carolina at 573, Michigan State at 578, Furman and Vanderbilt at 579 and Clemson at 580.
The Razorbacks' Brooke Matthews leads individually at 17-under. Bae, at 9-under, is third individually. In addition, Holpfer is tied for 16th at 2-under 142, Don and Hung are tied for 18th at 1-under 143 and Craig is tied for 31st at 145.
The final round will begin with an 8:45 shotgun start. Georgia will be paired with the Razorbacks and Gators, teeing off from Nos. 1-3. Live scoring is updated on a three-hole basis at www.golfstat.com.
"Unlike football and basketball, we can't play defense tomorrow," Brewer said. "We just need to worry about ourselves and go out and try to shoot as low as we can tomorrow and hope we have a chance to be at the top of the field at the end of the final round."
