QUICK KICKS
Series History
Thursday's season-opening matchup is the first between Georgia and Campbell.
Entering with Momentum
Georgia enters the 2021 season looking to build upon the strong finish to last spring's campaign, which wrapped up with consecutive wins over Wake Forest and NC State. In the fall portion of the schedule, the Bulldogs reached No. 8 in the United Soccer Coaches rankings and earned wins over South Carolina and Tennessee, as well as a draw with Florida. In the SEC Tournament, the Bulldogs fell, 2-1, to Auburn in double overtime in the second round.
Four to Watch
Graduate defender Kayla Bruster, senior midfielder Abby Boyan, senior defender Cecily Stoute, and senior goalkeeper Emory Wegener were named to the 2021 SEC Preseason Watch List Wednesday morning. All four Georgia honorees were members of last season's All-SEC Team, with Boyan being named to the First Team. Overall, 79.3 percent (23 of 29) of last year's All-SEC performers are returning for the 2021 season. In other preseason conference news, the Bulldogs were picked by the league's coaches to finish 13th in the SEC.
Mix of Veterans and Newcomers
The aforementioned All-SEC quartet leads a seasoned group that includes eight seniors and two graduates (Bruster, Mollie Belisle) taking advantage of the COVID fifth year. Belisle and Boyan accounted for 55 percent of the Bulldogs' scoring last season, while Wegener posted three shutouts. The veteran group is joined by a talented freshman class that features 14 newcomers, including forwards Danielle Lewin and Isabella Muzzolini, defender Jessie Dunn, and midfielder Caroline Belisle, the younger sister of Mollie.
Offensive Explosion in Preseason
Following a 2-0 defeat at No. 6 Duke last Tuesday, Georgia exploded for six goals Saturday evening in an exhibition win over Kennesaw State. The Bulldogs outshot the Owls by a 23-5 margin, including a 12-1 advantage in shots on goal. Lewin and fellow freshman Chandler Kenny combined for three goals in the victory.
SCOUTING CAMPBELL
Historic Season
In the condensed 2021 spring season, Head Coach Samar Azem led her alma mater to its first Big South Conference championship since 1993 and first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2004. The Camels' season ended with a 1-0 defeat to Iowa in the first round on April 27. Four members were named to the All-Southeast Region by the United Soccer Coaches Association, including first teamer Laney Peabody.
Returners
Campbell return eight starters from last season's team. Peabody, the Big South Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, leads seven returning all-conference honorees. Other talented returners include senior forward Jessica Donald, who notched four game-winning goals, and sophomore midfielder Cazzi Norgren, who ranked 39th nationally on TopDrawerSoccer's Top 100 freshman list. With 10 newcomers joining the roster, the Camels were selected second in the Big South preseason poll.
Offensive Prowess
With 96 percent of its scoring returning from 2020-21, Campbell expects to once again be among the nation's top offensive teams. Last season, the Camels led the country in corner kicks per game (10.69) and finished fourth in shots per game (18.15). The team also ranked in the top 30 nationally in assists per game, total assists, and points per game.
