Georgia Beats LSU To Advance At SEC Tournament

HOOVER, Ala.—Georgia used a four-run outburst in the first inning along with excellent pitching and defense to oust LSU at the Hoover Met Tuesday in the opening round of the SEC Tournament.
With the win, the Bulldogs (31-23) advance to Wednesday's double-elimination format against top-ranked Arkansas while the Tigers (34-22) are eliminated.
In the first, LSU loaded the bases on a pair of singles and a hit batter. However, freshman left-hander Luke Wagner and the Bulldogs surrendered just a run on a double play and trailed briefly 1-0. In the bottom of the frame, Ben Anderson set the tone for a big inning with a leadoff double. Cole Tate followed with an infield single. With one out, Garrett Blaylock drew a walk to load the bases. Riley King made it 1-1 with a fielder's choice. Senior Chaney Rogers delivered the big blow, a two-out, three-run double off Tiger ace right-hander Landon Marceneaux for a 4-1 advantage. For Rogers, it extended his hitting streak to a career-best 11 games.
And with that, the scoring concluded for the night, marking the first time in SEC Tournament history that all the runs by both teams were scored in the first inning, a span of 554 games. But, there was plenty of drama to follow. In the fourth, LSU put two on with one out and the Bulldogs turned to freshman Jaden Woods. He struck out Alex Milazzo, and on the play, the Tigers attempted a double steal and freshman catcher Fernando Gonzalez fired a strike to Blaylock to nab Drew Bianco for a double play.
Woods (4-1) would need just 48 pitches over the next 3.2 scoreless and hitless innings with five strikeouts to earn his fourth victory of the season, retiring all 10 batters he faced. In the eighth, Georgia looked to Ben Harris, and the Tigers loaded the bases with one out. He came back to strike out Zach Arnold on a nine-pitch at bat and then Bianco to maintain a three-run advantage. In the ninth, Georgia gave the ball to Jack Gowen and he retired the Tigers in order for his first career save. Also of note, Bulldog senior Cole Tate notched his seventh three-hit game and team-high 20th multi-hit game this year. Marceaux went the distance but fell to 6-5.
Up next, Georgia faces top-ranked and top-seed Arkansas (42-14) on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. ET. The game will be televised by the SEC Network and be available on the Georgia Bulldog Sports Network. Georgia went 1-2 against the SEC Champion Razorbacks in Fayetteville during the regular season.

"Our pitchers were unbelievable tonight. Luke Wagner gave us exactly what we needed in a quality start. To get through the top of their order is really difficult. Their one-through-four hitters are as good as you'll see in the country. That was our biggest concern was navigating that, and that's why you saw Ben Harris come in in the eighth. We felt like the close was really in the eighth because that part of the order was up. He made it interesting, and he gutted it out. Then, Jack Gowen came in and got his first save. I can't say enough about Jaden Woods. He was outstanding. It was all about the pitching today, and we made the plays when we needed too, and Chaney Rogers came through with a big, big hit. This is a huge win for our program."
