Georgia-Ole Miss Series Begins Thursday At Foley Field

May 19, 2021 | Baseball

ATHENS ------The Georgia Bulldogs play host to No. 11 Ole Miss starting Thursday in the final regular season series at Foley Field. First pitch is set for 7:02 p.m. ET and be available on SEC Network+ and the Georgia Bulldog Sports Network.

Georgia (29-21, 12-15 SEC) is finally home after a tough seven-game road swing where it faced No. 1 Arkansas, No. 7 Florida and then rival Ga. Tech. The Bulldogs went 2-5 in this stretch that culminated in a 14-inning loss Tuesday. The Rebels (36-16, 16-11 SEC) took two of three from No. 2 Vanderbilt last weekend in Oxford and then dropped a 9-7 decision to UT-Martin Tuesday.

The Georgia-Ole Miss series goes back to 1923, and the Rebels lead 45-39. The teams last met at the 2019 SEC Tournament with the Rebels winning 5-3. Ole Miss last came to Athens in 2016 and won the series 2-1 and then won a game over the Bulldogs in the SEC Tournament. Georgia went 1-2 in Oxford during the 2018 season and lost an extra-inning affair to the Rebels later that year at the SEC Tournament. Georgia has won five of the nine series played in Athens.

Foley Field will be at 100 percent capacity for the first time this season for the series with the Rebels. Game times will be 7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and 2 p.m. on Saturday. Georgia's maximum home capacity before this weekend was capped at 664 but now more than 3,200 have a chance to attend.

The annual Senior Day recognition will be held pregame Saturday. It will feature the Class of 2020 and 2021 graduates. Ben Anderson, Darryn Pasqua, C.J. Smith, Cole Tate and Connor Tate are the latest Bulldogs to earn a UGA degree along with student assistant coach Nelson Ward, who played for the Bulldogs from 2012-14. They join Riley King, Logan Moody and Mason Meadows who graduated last year and returned to play in 2021. Also, Chaney Rogers and Ryan Webb are slated to finish their degree this summer while Garrett Blaylock aims to complete his degree next year. The Bulldog graduates now sport a patch on their game jersey as an "SEC Graduate." Eleven seniors plus four managers will be recognized during Saturday's Senior Day.  On Wednesday, the Southeastern Conference announced its annual Community Service Team for baseball, and King was Georgia's representative.

After its 6-1 win over No. 7 Florida last Sunday in Gainesville, Georgia clinched a spot in the SEC Tournament. The Bulldogs will be making their fifth consecutive SEC Tournament appearance, their longest stretch since making six straight from 1985-90. The 2021 event begins Tuesday, May 25 in Hoover, Ala. Georgia's seed, first opponent and game time will be determined Saturday night.

Comments From SEC Series Preview Media Session

Ike Cousins Head Baseball Coach Scott Stricklin
On the Ole Miss Series
"We're playing a very good team in Ole Miss. We need to win this series. We have to find a way to score some runs against (Doug) Nikhazy on Thursday night. He's one of the best guys not only in the league but the entire country. We need to play good, all-around baseball. We need to play clean. We need to run the bases better and have better at bats. All those things come into play. We've played well the last two weekends, at Arkansas and at Florida and still haven't won the series. Now, we're at home, and we need to continue to play well and find a way to win a series."

Thoughts On Upcoming Senior Day
"Today, I wouldn't say it's starting to sink in but I'm starting to realize that Senior Day is coming. I've had some conversations with some different people here about how quick these five years have gone. I remember coming in as a freshman with summer workouts and getting to know all the guys. The memories have been amazing. There's no place I'd rather be than put on the jersey and represent the G. Georgia has been the place for me. It's going to be surreal. In the past, I've seen other seniors go through Senior Day, and I think that's a long ways away, but that day for me is coming. Still, we have a lot of baseball left to play and have a lot more weekends left ahead for us."
