No. 5 Florida Takes Series Over Bulldogs, 8-1

April 05, 2021 | Softball

ATHENS, Ga. – The 20th-ranked Georgia softball team dropped and 8-1 decision to No. 5 Florida Monday evening at Jack Turner Stadium. Florida concluded the series taking two-of-three games.

Junior Savana Sikes and freshman Payden Bordeau each picked up two hits apiece. Sikes' two hits were a double and a home run.

Graduate Mary Wilson Avant (12-3) suffered the loss in the circle, allowing four unearned runs in seven innings. She fanned six Gators in her complete game.

Charla Echols knocked a two-run home run to put the Gators in front early in the opening stanza. Later in the inning, an RBI ground plated another run for Florida, 3-0. Avant was able to work out of the inning, stranding two on. Echols knocked her second home run of the game, a solo shot to center, in the third, 4-0.

Sikes put Georgia on the board with one swing of the bat, hitting her fifth home run of the season over the wall in center in the bottom of the inning, 4-1.

Florida pushed across two unearned runs in the fourth to widen its lead to 6-1. Two more unearned runs came in to score for the Gators in the seventh, bringing the final tally to 8-1.

Georgia hits the road for four games away from Jack Turner Stadium beginning Wednesday at Kennesaw State. First pitch against the Owls is set for 5 p.m.

Head Coach Lu Harris-Champer
On what her team will take away from this game…
"It definitely gives us information about what we need to get back to work on, so we will definitely learn from it, grow from it, and come out grittier next time."

On what she saw from her team this series…
"What I'm proud of is of that Savana Sikes was awesome tonight. She was awesome at the plate. Payden Bordeau had a great weekend at the plate. I thought Mary [Wilson Avant] made some big pitches today. We made some plays. We can continue to get tougher and grittier as we continue into SEC play."
