Seventh Inning Rally Cut Short, Bulldogs Fall to Razorbacks, 5-2

April 17, 2021 | Softball

ATHENS, Ga. – Tenth-ranked Arkansas secured the series victory over 20th-ranked Georgia softball at Jack Turner Stadium Saturday afternoon, 5-2.

Graduate Alley Cutting (6-3) pitched her second complete game of the week for the Bulldogs. She struck out six Razorbacks and allowed four earned runs on five hits.

At the plate, freshmen Jayda Kearney and Payden Bordeau, along with sophomore Sara Mosley each picked up a hit on Saturday. Bordeau knocked her second home run of the season in the third.

Arkansas loaded the bases with no out to begin the game. The Razorbacks used a sacrifice fly to left and a wild pitch to plate a pair of runs and take a 2-0 lead. Cutting limited the damage, stranding the bases loaded in the frame.

The Razorbacks and Bulldogs traded solo home run in each half of the third by Danielle Gibson and Bordeau, bringing the score to 3-1 after three innings.

A two-RBI single sent back up the middle off the bat of Hannah McEwen added to Arkansas' lead in the fourth, 5-1.

Georgia attempted to mount a seventh-inning rally. Mosley singled up the middle and was pinch ran for by junior CJ Landrum. Kearney got a double to fall in left center and the speedy Landrum came in to score from first. Redshirt-sophomore Jaiden Fields was then hit by a pitch to bring the tying run to the plate, but a foul out to third ended the rally and the game, 5-2.

The Bulldogs and Razorbacks will complete the three-game series Sunday at 2 p.m. from Jack Turner Stadium.

Head coach Lu Harris-Champer
On what the team did well today…
"I thought Alley [Cutting] played really good in the circle for us. I think she got better as the game went on. I thought the defense played well behind her. I thought Payden [Bordeau] had a couple of really good at bats, so that was fun to see. I liked the scrap at the end of the game. Arkansas is a good game. You have to give Mary Haff and her team credit. They played well, and I can't wait to get back out tomorrow and get another shot. It was also fun to see so many alumni here today. It always brings a big smile to our faces."

On takeaways from this game going into tomorrow…
"Just continue to be tough minded. We have to be gritty and just continue to play our game and make the adjustments needed. Really, just get out there a compete. They're a good team, and so are we. We're going to go out there and compete hard."
