BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Led by a trio of par-or-better scores from Jo Hua Hung, Jenny Bae and Isabella Holpfer, the No. 10-ranked Georgia women's golf team fired a 2-over 290 in Wednesday's opening round of the 2020 SEC Championships. The Bulldogs are in 12th place on the team leaderboard at Greystone Golf and Country Club with 36 more holes of stroke play to be contested.
"We have a very good game plan to attack the course when we can and make some birdies," Brewer said. "We showed that for most of the day. We feel good about ourselves and feel like we have a few days to get ourselves in position to move into match play."
Following 54 holes of stroke play, the tournament field will be trimmed to eight teams for a match play bracket. The quarterfinals and semifinals will be held on Saturday, with the championship match televised live on the SEC Network on Sunday from 8:30-1:00 ET.
Hung led Georgia with a 3-under, equaling her career-best collegiate score. Bae and Holpfer both signed for even-par 72s. Rounding out the Bulldogs' counting rounds was a 77 from Alison Crenshaw.
The Bulldogs were hot early, covering the first nine holes at 5-under as a team and then gaining another stroke at No. 10 shortly before a 45-minute rain delay. When play resumed, Georgia gradually leaked shots the rest of the way.
"Jo had a great start," Brewer said. "She had it at 6-under at one time. We may have lost a little of our rhythm and momentum during the delay. That not an excuse, but you have to wonder what would've happened if we didn't have to stop. At the same time, we have to strong enough to battle through it. Other teams had to do so."
Hung shot 3-under 9 for the fourth time at Georgia, doing so twice this spring and also at Greystone during the second round of the 2019 SECs. Hung recorded her fifth par-or-better effort in 16 rounds this spring and sixth overall this season. Bae notched her team-leading ninth par-or-better score during 2020-21, and Holpfer posted her third.
Hung blistered the first 11 holes. She birdied No. 3, No. 5, No. 7 and No. 8 to reach the midway point at 4-under and then birdied the first two holes of the back side to move to 6-under. Consecutive bogeys at No. 12 and No. 13, followed by another at No. 15, brought Hung to 3-under before she wrapped up her day with a trio of pars.
Bae and Holpfer were steady throughout the round. Bae's day featured 16 pars, a birdie at No. 6 and a bogey at No. 13. Holpfer mixed eight pars with a birdie at No. 5 to turn at 1-under. She then birdied No. 10 before giving those strokes back with bogeys at No. 12 and No. 16.
No. 1 South Carolina and No. 4 LSU share the team lead at 272. The Gamecocks' Ana Paleaz is atop the individual leaderboard after firing an 8-under 64, two shots better than Brooke Matthews from Arkansas and Alden Wallace of LSU.
For Georgia, Hung is tied for 16th, Bae and Holpfer are tied for 38th, Crenshaw is tied for 64th and Gabriela Coello, who shot 78 on Friday, is tied for 67th.
The Bulldogs will be paired with Texas A&M and Missouri for Thursday's second round, teeing off from No. 10 in 10-minute increments between 10:10-10:50 a.m. ET. Live scoring is available via www.golfstat.com.
"Every time we've started on that side of the course for match play, we've won," Brewer said. "Maybe it will be good for us to start there tomorrow. Hopefully, we can got off to a good start and carry that momentum onto the front side. It's definitely been shown that there are birdies to have on the front side."
