No. 19 Georgia Extends Win Streak to 10 Games Saturday

March 06, 2021 | Softball

ATHENS, Ga. – The 19th-ranked Georgia softball team extended its win streak to 10 games Saturday at Jack Turner Stadium with wins over UAB and Mercer.

The Bulldogs came back in the first game against UAB to tie the contest in the bottom of the seventh. The game was sent into an 11-inning affair with the Bulldogs coming out on top, 6-5. Georgia turned around and run-ruled Mercer 9-0 in five innings the second game.

Redshirt-sophomore Jaiden Fields highlighted the day for the Bulldogs. She hit her first career home run in a pinch hit opportunity in the UAB game. Fields went deep twice in the second game, first a two-run shot, then a grand slam to lift Georgia past the Bears.

Georgia 6, UAB 5 (11 innings)
The Bulldogs scattered nine hits in the contest with freshman Sydney Chambley and Fields recording two hits and two RBI apiece, including a home run each.

Freshman Madison Kerpics pitched four innings in her start but would get a no-decision. Graduate Alley Cutting (2-1) picked up the win in relief, working seven innings, tying a career-long at UGA.

After a quiet Georgia first, Chambley drove her fifth homerun of the season over the left field wall, giving the Bulldogs the first lead of the day in the bottom of the second frame 1-0.

With sophomore Sydney Kuma on third in the bottom of the third, an error by the Blazer's third baseman plated Kuma to extend the Georgia lead 2-0.

UAB tied the contest 2-2 in its half of the fourth with a two-run homer down the left field line off the bat of Sierra Frazier. The Blazers broadened their lead to 5-2 on three hits, a walk, and a hit by pitch in the top of the fifth.

Not going down without a fight, pinch hitter Fields capitalized with a runner on, her first career homerun over the center field fence and cutting the deficit 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth.

Back-to-back walks drawn by sophomore Sara Mosley and freshman Jayda Kearney put two Bulldogs on base in the bottom of the seventh inning. A deep fly ball to right field off the bat of Bordeau moved freshman pinch-runner Aniyah Black into scoring position. A wild pitch plated Black, tying the game at 5-5 and sending the contest into extra innings.

After four extra innings, the Georgia offense was reignited in the bottom of the 11th inning with a double to right off the bat of Fincher followed by a single by Kearney. With a single to left, Chambley plated Fincher and clinched the extra-inning win 6-5.

Georgia 9, Mercer 0 (5 inn.)
Fields blasted two home runs in the second game of the twin bill including a grand slam, single handedly driving in six of Georgia's nine runs. She finished the game with three hits and three runs scored. Fincher also tallied three hits with three runs scored.

In the circle, Lauren Mathis (2-1) worked four innings in her start, striking out six and allowing just one hit. Freshman Riley Orcutt made her NCAA debut, striking out the side in the fifth inning.

The Bulldog offense wasted no time in game two with Fincher's second double on the day starting off the bottom of the opening frame. A deep homerun over the center field wall marked Fields' second home run of the day as well as her second career home run, giving Georgia the 2-0 advantage.

The Fincher-Fields duo stayed hot offensively in the Bulldog third with back-to-back singles. Kearney followed up with a single to plate both runners. Mosley responded with a double, scoring Kearney on the play and extending the Bulldog lead 5-0 at the end of the third.

Fields blasted the first Bulldog grand slam of the season in the home half of the fourth to put Georgia ahead 9-0. Orcutt entered in the fifth, shutting down the Bears and securing the run-rule victory.

The Bulldogs and Mercer will square off in the final game of the Bulldog Classic Sunday at 2 p.m. at Jack Turner Stadium.

Head Coach Lu Harris-Champer
On Jaiden Fields' performance….
"It was awesome. Jaiden Fields was outstanding today. She's been having some really good days in practice. She was unbelievable after classes yesterday afternoon. She was unreal. Today when she got her opportunity, she was just awesome. Eight RBI in a day, what a fantastic day. To get up there and just get her swing off, really proud of her for doing what she does all the time in practice. It was a great day for her."

On Madiso Kerpicsn starting off the game….
"I thought [Madison] did outstanding in her start. She had a good mix of speed and pitches. I'm also proud of Alley [Cutting], she came in and pitched seven innings after that to close it out. They're a really good contrast in their styles of pitching so they mixed really well for the entire game."

Redshirt-sophomore Jaiden Fields

"It felt amazing. I've been working so hard for so long so just to finally get my swing off felt great and just allow myself to trust the process is really what allowed me to do well including my teammates and coaches support."

On her grand slam…
"I was just trying to get a base hit honestly. Thank God, glory to God for all my performances. Just thankful for that and being able to help out my team."

Freshman Madison Kerpics

"Our dugout today. We were super loud cheering and we all wanted to be there, we all wanted to work for each other, and I think that really showed today."
