No. 5 Bulldogs Blank North Florida

March 06, 2021 | Baseball

ATHENS -- -A trio of Bulldogs combined to strike out 15 to lead fifth-ranked Georgia to a 6-0 shutout of North Florida Saturday at Foley Field.

Ryan Webb, Darryn Pasqua and Liam Sullivan combined to scatter eight hits with one walk while registering 15 strikeouts for Georgia's first shutout of the season. The Bulldogs (8-3) loaded the bases with nobody out in the third and managed a lone run on a fielder's choice by Randon Jernigan. At that point, Webb, who was on a pitch count, had provided three scoreless innings with eight strikeouts.

UNF (4-7) led off the fourth with a double by Tanner Clark. With runners at the corners and two out, the Bulldogs looked to Darryn Pasqua in relief of Webb. He came on and struck out Cade Reich to maintain Georgia's 1-0 lead. UNF threatened in the sixth, loading the bases with one out as the Bulldogs turned to the bullpen again. Sullivan, a freshman, came in and struck out Ricky Presno and got Reich to pop out to third to keep Georgia in front 1-0. In the bottom of the seventh, Garrett Blaylock led off with a single and took third on a ground-rule double by freshman Luke Wagner. Then, Chaney Rogers (2-for-4, 3 RBI) smashed a double off the left center field wall to make it 3-0.

Georgia would add three runs in the eight including a two-run triple by redshirt freshman Kameron Guidry. He was making his first career start, getting the call at shortstop as Georgia has had an injury bug at that position. Starter Cole Tate along with Josh McAllister have hamstring injuries while Buddy Floyd, who started there Friday, is bruised up following a collision around the second base bag last night. Guidry became the fourth different Bulldog to start at shortstop this year. From 2017-20, Georgia's Gold-Glove Award-winning shortstop Cam Shepherd never missed a contest in his Bulldog career, starting 198 consecutive games.

The series concludes Sunday with first pitch slated for 1:02 p.m., and it will be available on the Georgia Bulldog Sports Network and SEC Network+.

Georgia's Ike Cousins Head Coach Scott Stricklin
On the game…
"Our pitching was strong. All three guys were great. Ryan Webb was on a pitch count, and I knew he wanted to stay in so as soon as I came out of the dugout I signaled to the bullpen. He's a competitor. Darry Pasqua did his job, got us out of a tough spot and then Liam Sullivan was great. He's got a three-pitch mix and his future is a starter."

On the injuries at shortstop...
"We've started four different shortstops this season, that's probably a record. I thought Kameron did a great job at shortstop for us today, and he'll probably be in there again Sunday. He got a big two-run triple for his first career hit too.

On the game…
"It was nice to get those late runs. It was a close game, and our pitching was awesome. They did a good job today."

Ryan Webb, LHP
On his performance
"I knew I was getting close on my pitch count, and I looked in the dugout and was thinking, don't do it. Don't come out here because I wanted to finish the inning. But they made the call. I think I'll feel close to 100 percent in a week or two. I felt good with my fastball command and felt like I was able to establish the fastball, curveball and change-up today."
