Rogers Walk-Off Clinches Series For Georgia
March 07, 2021 | Baseball
ATHENS -- Senior Chaney Rogers delivered a three-run walk-off home run to lead fifth-ranked Georgia to a 7-4 series-clinching win over North Florida Sunday at Foley Field.
It marked the second time this year that Georgia (9-3) has hit a walk-off home run as Josh McAllister did it last weekend versus Gardner-Webb. The Ospreys (4-8) took a 2-0 lead in the third when senior first baseman Alex Kachler connected for his third home run of the series. Meanwhile, North Florida left-hander Tony Roca retired 11 straight before allowing a two-out single in the fourth to senior second baseman Riley King. Georgia broke through for a run in the fifth. Senior Garrett Blaylock smashed his first career triple to right centerfield and then scored on the play on an errant throw in by shortstop Abraham Sequera. It was only the second hit of the afternoon for the Bulldogs.
Georgia freshman starter Jaden Woods provided 5.2 innings with seven strikeouts, both career highs, before leaving with two on in the sixth as Georgia looked to junior Jack Gowen. Austin Bogart made it 3-1 with an RBI-double off him. Then, the Bulldogs brought in left-hander Ben Harris who struck out Cade Westbrook to end any further damage. Georgia loaded the bases to start the bottom of the sixth with Kameron Guidry and Randon Jernigan collecting singles and Ben Anderson drawing a walk. UNF went to the bullpen, lifting Rocca in favor of Stephen Halstead. He got King to bounce into a double play and retired Connor Tate to maintain a 3-2 advantage. The Ospreys loaded bases with two outs when Georgia's Michael Polk made his 2021 debut. UNF added a run on a walk for a 4-2 lead before the Bulldogs got out of the inning.
UNF brought in Eddie Miller in the seventh and Georgia scored the first earned run he allowed this year. With one out, Shane Marshall smashed a triple and scored on a groundout by Blaylock to close the gap to 4-3. Then with two outs and an 0-2 count, Guidry tied the game with a run-scoring double. He was making his second straight start at shortstop. Collin Caldwell and the Bulldogs got out of a jam with one out and the bases loaded in the eighth. King started a double play on a ball headed up the middle to keep it 4-all.
In the ninth, Luke Wagner led off with a single, took second on a sacrifice bunt by Marshall. The Ospreys opted to intentional walk Blaylock and then Rogers crushed a pitch over the right field wall for the game-winner. Freshman Hank Bearden improved to 2-0 while Brandon Reitz dropped to 0-1.
Georgia will be back in action Tuesday in Statesboro when it faces Georgia Southern. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m., and the game will be available on the Georgia Bulldog Sports Network.

On chipping away at the deficit and ultimately winning…
"Our guys locked in when their best guys came in today. Our guys really, really were good, I thought we had great at-bats in the last three innings, and just found a way to win the game."
On Kameron Guidry's play…
"You can't ask for anything more than that. You put him in the nine hole and put him at short…have a productive at-bat, and here he comes hitting balls off the walls, doubles and triples, big RBIs, and made some unbelievable plays defensively. Kam has done everything in the last two games, I'm so happy for him. He worked his tail off. He's always here early, always takes extra groundballs, and always hits more. It didn't look like Kam was going to get his chance, but all of a sudden, some guys go down and here he is, and man I'm really happy for him."

On the game and being ready…
I have always been prepared for the opportunity. We have a really deep team, a lot of good players and next man up. I was ready to have the opportunity to help my team.
"It's a lot of visualization that goes into it because you don't get those reps every time. Just thinking about what you'd do in that situation and just already having an outcome that you want and just make it happen."

On pitching in a tight game and the late offensive support
"When it's a close ball game like it was today, you can kind of feel it. Coming out of the bullpen, I could tell our guys were a little amped up. It's a good feeling when you hear that."
