Bulldogs Fall in Series Finale, 3-2

OXFORD, Miss. – The 17th-ranked Georgia softball team dropped a 3-2 decision Sunday afternoon in the series finale against Ole Miss.
Freshman Britton Rogers (0-1) worked one inning in her first SEC start. She allowed three runs on two hits, suffering the loss in the circle. Graduate Mary Wilson Avant pitched five scoreless innings in relief, allowing just two hits and fanning 11 Rebels.
At the plate, freshman Ellie Armistead provided two hits, including an RBI single in the fifth and a solo home run in the seventh to account for both of the Bulldogs' runs. Georgia outhit the Rebels 6-4 on Sunday.
The Rebels (21-11, 5-4) pushed a run across the plate on a sacrifice fly to center in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead on Georgia.
Ole Miss plated two more runs in the bottom of the second on a bases-loaded hit batsman and a passed ball to widen the lead to 3-0.
Georgia (22-5, 3-3) jumped on the board in the top of the fifth. With runners on the corners, Armistead got a single to drop in shallow left center to plate freshman catcher Payden Bordeau and narrow the deficit to 3-1.
Armistead's third home run of the season was a solo shot with two out in the top of the seventh to bring the final tally to 3 -2.
Georgia will host Furman at Jack Turner Stadium Wednesday in midweek action. First pitch against the Paladins is set for 6 p.m. Georgia will then host No. 5 Florida in a three-game series beginning Saturday at 8 p.m. on ESPN.
