Bulldogs Head to Greensboro for NCAA Men’s Championships

March 23, 2021 | Swimming & Diving

ATHENS, Ga. – Following a second-place finish at the SEC Championships, the University of Georgia men's swimming and diving team faces the nation's best this week at the 2021 NCAA Men's Swimming & Diving Championships, hosted by North Carolina State University at the Greensboro Aquatic Center (GAC) in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The NCAA Championships open Wednesday, March 24 with the 800 freestyle relay, followed by three full days of competition concluding on Saturday, March 27. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, no spectators are allowed in the GAC. Live coverage of the meet will be available on ESPN3 and the ESPN app, with live results posted on NCAA.com and for subscribers on the MeetMobile app.

The fourth-ranked Georgia men carry 13 swimmers and one diver on their championship roster. The Bulldogs look to sustain the momentum from their historic performance at last month's SEC Championships, where they finished second behind Florida with a program-record 1,324.5 points. Georgia will seek to return to the NCAA top 10 for the first time since 2018. Under Tom Cousins Head Coach Jack Bauerle, the Bulldogs have posted 17 top-10 finishes, including three in the top five.

Georgia's contingent features a strong mix of veterans and freshmen, helping to make the Bulldogs a solid top-five contender. Redshirt senior Javier Acevedo is a top-eight seed in each of his three individual events, while senior Camden Murphy carries the No. 3 seed in the 100 butterfly.  Freshman Jake Magahey is ranked second in both the 500 and 1,650 freestyle with fellow freshman Luca Urlando seeded seventh in both butterfly events. All four swimmers won SEC Championships in Columbia, with Magahey and Murphy both setting new school records.

After missing out on their first NCAAs last season, sophomores Dillon Downing, Ian Grum, and Zach Hils will look to achieve All-America status, highlighted by Downing as the fifth seed in the 50 freestyle. Senior Jack Dalmolin, the SEC silver medalist in the 200 breaststroke, will also make his NCAA individual debut, as will junior Keegan Walsh, redshirt sophomore Bradley Dunham, and freshman Tommy-Lee Camblong, each of whom finished top-eight at SECs. Senior Greg Reed and junior Andrew Abruzzo return to the NCAA pool after both competing in 2019.

At the diving well, senior Zach Allen will make his NCAA debut in the 1-meter springboard after qualifying for the canceled 2020 championships. Allen is seeded ninth overall and will compete in the preliminary round on Thursday at noon. In his last outing, he finished seventh in the 1-meter at Zones, which were also held at the GAC.

In addition to the individual performers, all five of Georgia's relays will compete at NCAA, having each qualified with A-cuts. During this season, the Bulldogs set school records in the 200 freestyle, 400 freestyle, and 200 medley relays.
