ATHENS, Ga. — The No. 13-ranked Georgia women's golf team posted a 302 in Sunday's final round of the 49th Annual Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic. The Bulldogs finished fifth in the stellar field that featured four top-10 and eight top-25 teams competing at the University of Georgia Golf Course.
"If you look at scores, we had a chance to move the leader board up a couple of spots, but we held our position at least," head coach Josh Brewer said. "It was another top-5 finish for the spring season and a lot of positives to take away overall and some errors we can get better at. This was a very strong field. It was the first time this spring with all 14 SEC schools competing and you add to that a powerhouse like USC, Louisville from the ACC and another strong team in Charleston."
No. 1 South Carolina held off No. 6 Ole Miss to claim the team title. The Gamecocks finished at 881, two shots better than the Rebels. Rounding out the top-10 teams were Kentucky at 890, No. 16 Arkansas at 893, the Bulldogs at 898, No. 10 Southern Cal at 899, No. 4 LSU at 903, No. 12 Auburn at 905, No. 22 Florida at 907 and Vanderbilt at 908.
Junior Jenny Bae and senior Gabriela Coello posted Georgia's best scores of the day, with each shooting 2-over 74.
"I had an awesome round today," Coello said. "It was very special. It was my last Liz. It was my last round at home. I made some really good birdies. I made a birdie on No. 1 and I've always joked that I've never made a birdie there. That was awesome. I hit some amazing shots. It was tough today. The conditions were so difficult all three days. The 2-over felt like 5-under."
All 10 golfers on the Bulldogs' roster competed as two teams. Bae led Georgia's top squad, which also counted 75 from Céleste Dao, a 76 from Jo Hua Hung and a 77 from Caroline Craig. Coello paced the Black team, which rounded out its counting scores with a pair of 79s from Isabella Holpfer and Candice Mahé and an 81 from Alison Crenshaw.
"It was fun to compete against great teams and great golfers," Dao said. "We play this course often in qualifiers, but it's hard to shoot low. Seeing all these great players shooting high scores shows how hard the course is. Often during qualifiers I'll be mad over my scores but then I realize it's a really tough course."
LSU's Ingrid Lindblad birdied her final hole to finish at 4-under and claim the individual title. She held off South Carolina's Ana Palaez, who wrapped up at 2-under 214.
For Georgia, Hung tied for 16th at 223, Bae tied for 22nd at 224, Caterina Don tied for 32nd at 226, Holpfer tied for 34th at 227, Dao tied for 44th at 230, Craig tied for 60th at 235, Mahé placed 77th at 239, Coello tied for 80th at 241, Crenshaw tied for 85th at 243 and Zoë Walker finished 90th at 258.
The Bulldogs will return to action in two and a half weeks when Georgia wraps up its regular-season schedule at the LSU Tiger Golf Classic. The SEC Championships will be held April 14-18 at Greystone Golf and Country Club just south of Birmingham.
Before Georgia travels to LSU, Don, Holpfer and Mahé will compete in the Augusta National Women's Amateur. The world's best amateur golfers will take part in the second edition of the tournament on March 31-April 3. Don finished 12th at the inaugural event in 2019, while Holpfer and Mahé earned invitations via their standing in the World Amateur Golf Rankings.
