ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia posted a 301 under blustery conditions at the 49th Annual Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic on Saturday, climbing one spot to fifth on the team leaderboard in the process.
The No. 13-ranked Bulldogs are 16 shots off the pace of No. 1 South Carolina entering Sunday's final round. The Gamecocks' 1-under 287 provided them with a five-shot cushion over the field through 36 holes.
"We know what to expect tomorrow and we know if we play well we have a chance to move way up and possibly even compete at the top of the leaderboard," head coach Josh Brewer said.
Wind wreaked havoc throughout the day. After the field covered the UGA Golf Course at a 75.24 pace during Friday's round, that number bulged to 77.93 per golfer on Saturday.
Sophomore Caterina Don fired a 2-under 70 to lead Georgia, one of only five under-par efforts of the golfers from 18 teams in the field. The Bulldogs also counted a 77 from Céleste Dao and a pair of 78s from Jenny Bae and Jo Hua Hung.
"Sometimes it's hard to understand how good par can be," Brewer said. "It shows you how good a player Caterina is to shoot 2-under in these conditions. We moved ourselves up one spot and we know what's coming tomorrow so we're excited to see if we can continue to move up."
Don's bounced back following bogeys at No. 3 and No. 6 to record consecutive birdies at No. 7 and No. 8 and turn at even. She remained there for the first six holes on the back side before finishing with birdies at No. 16 and No. 18.
"I don't think there was a break over the 18 holes today," Don said. "Even what you think might be the easier holes can change in an instant. You just have to try to hit the middle of the greens. There were some holes where the pins were in spots where you could go for them. Most of the time, if you hit the middle of the green, you're not going to be wrong."
All 10 Georgia golfers are competing in the tournament, with a second quintet of Bulldogs comprising a Black Team. On the individual leaderboard, Don is tied for fifth at even-par 144, Hung is tied for 14th at 147, Isabella Holpfer is tied for 18th, Bae is tied for 30th at 150, Dao is tied for 54th at 155, Candice Mahé is tied for 76th at 160, Caroline Craig and Alison Crenshaw are tied for 83rd at 158, Gabriela Coello is 89th at 167 and Zoë Walker is 90th at 173.
Georgia played better after the turn. The Bulldogs were 10-over as a team through the first nine holes before covering the rest of the layout at 3-over.
"The course is set up to have chances to make birdies on the last eight holes or so so you have to just be tough enough to get through the first 10," Brewer said. "If you can do that, hopefully when you find yourself in position to make birdies you can shoot under par and not just try to salvage a round."
LSU's Ingrid Lindblad retained the individual lead. She shot 75 on Saturday and is at 5-under 139, two shots better than Ana Palaez of South Carolina.
The No. 1-ranked Gamecocks are at 4-over 580 through 36 holes. Rounding out the top 10 teams on the leaderboard at No. 16 Arkansas at 585, No. 6 Ole Miss at 586, No. 4 LSU at 592, the Bulldogs at 596, No. 10 Southern Cal at 597, Kentucky at 598, Mississippi State at 600, No. 22 Florida a 602 and No. 12 Auburn at 605.
Tee times for Sunday will begin at 8:30, with three teams teeing off in waves from No. 1 and No. 10. Georgia will be paired with LSU and Southern Cal and will tee off from No. 1 from 9:25-10:05. The Black team will play with Tennessee and College of Charleston, opening play at No. 10 between 10:10-10:50. Live scoring is available via golfstat.com.
