Bulldogs Fall to Tigers, 1-0, on the Road
March 13, 2021 | Soccer
AUBURN, Ala. – The University of Georgia soccer team fell in a tight 1-0 battle against the Auburn Tigers in Auburn, Ala. on Sunday afternoon.
The Bulldogs recorded nine shots on the day compared to the Tigers' seven. Junior Abby Boyan and freshman Tori Penn led with two strikes each. Five other Bulldogs each had one.
Junior goalkeeper Emory Wegener faced seven shots, saving five.
"A very challenging game, Auburn is a good team at home," said Head Coach Billy Lesesne. "I thought we responded well to the setback last week, came out and played with a lot of energy. We executed well in a lot of different phases of the game, but unfortunately conceded a goal and weren't able to get one back. We created really good opportunities and hope that we get the same great response when we go to Clemson, another very good team, next week. It's all about development and we're playing good teams that help us do that. Disappointed with the result, but thankful for the opportunities moving forward."
The first half stayed even between Georgia and Auburn. Four Bulldogs recorded four shots, but the Tiger's keeper stayed solid. Wegener faced four shots, saving three with one going wide of the net. Both teams would go into the second tied at zero.
Auburn opened the scoring 16 minutes into the second half. Olivia Candelino took a strike at the top of the 18-yard box to hit the upper left corner past Wegener.
Taking control of the game, Georgia battled in the midfield. The Bulldogs followed with five shots compared to the Tigers two, but were unable to finish.
Georgia will head to Clemson, S.C. next weekend to battle against No. 9 Clemson on Saturday at 2p.m. ET.
