No. 18 Bulldogs Beat Panthers Behind Mathis’ One-Hit Shutout
March 10, 2021 | Softball
ATHENS, Ga. – Georgia senior pitcher Lauren Mathis pitched a complete-game, one-hit shutout of Georgia State Wednesday evening. The 19th-ranked Bulldogs edged the Panthers 1-0 in the contest.
Mathis (3-1) went the distance in the seven-inning affair, pitching a season-long outing and fanning seven Panthers and walking only two.
The Bulldogs (15-2) scattered four total hits from four different student-athletes including senior Mackenzie Puckett, redhisrt-sophomore Jaiden Fields, freshman Sydney Chambley, and junior Savana Sikes.
Georgia plated the would-be difference maker in the game in the bottom of the second. Chambley knocked a one-out triple off the wall in center. Sikes followed with a triple off the wall in nearly the same spot to easily plate Chambley and put Georgia ahead 1-0.
Mathis mowed down the Panthers en route to the shutout in the final five innings.
Georgia will host North Dakota and East Carolina at Jack Turner Stadium this weekend as part of the UGA Classic beginning Friday.

On Lauren Mathis' performance in tonight's game...
"Lauren was awesome today. She was masterful out there. She threw the ball to all different quadrants. She had really pretty spin to her pitches, and I was really proud of the way that she went after her pitches and the way that she threw them. I'm just really proud of her. She had a great night tonight, and I thought the defense was really strong behind her."
On how they are preparing heading into the UGA Classic this weekend...
"We're just doing what we do every day all the time. We're focusing on us and what we do, and get a little bit better at what we do each day."
Senior Lauren Mathis
On how she prepared going into tonight's game...
"I actually started doing something different, and I started it today. I went behind the bench in the bullpen, and I said my prayers and visualized what I wanted to happen during the game. So, it was pretty spot on."
On how they are preparing for the games this weekend...
"Probably just a lot of fundamental work obviously. Also, a lot of mindset work, just working on being in the right mindset for the games and working the process."
Freshman Sydney Chambley
On her triple followed by Savana Sikes' triple in the bottom of the second...
"It was a really big deal that Savana stepped up there and did what she does like she always does. It was awesome to get my swing off, but at the same time to have a teammate that I trust to get me home was even better."
