Darlene Camacho Hired at UGA

ATHENS -- Darlene Camacho, Assistant Athletics Director at the University of Texas, has been named Senior Associate Athletics Director for Strategic Communications at the University of Georgia according to an announcement Wednesday by UGAÂ J. Reid Parker Director of Athletics Josh Brooks.Â

In this role, Camacho will be responsible for implementing UGAAA's internal and external communication strategy while also advancing the Bulldog Athletics story and mission.

"We are thrilled to add someone with Darlene's diverse experience to our leadership team, " said Brooks. "She is a multi-talented and savvy athletics administrator, bringing with her an original, public relations-facing lens that will enhance our communications strategies. Strategic communications have become increasingly vital to higher education and college athletics, and Darlene will complement and enhance our strategies for the entire athletics program. She will lead focused, collaborative efforts and build relationships with key stakeholders to best serve our students, staff and Bulldog community."

Camacho comes to Athens after spending the past four years working as Assistant Athletics Director, Donor Relations and Engagement at The University of Texas. Her responsibilities included oversight of development operations including donor relations, special events, stewardship and all communications. Previously she served as chief executive officer of a boutique sports services company in Berlin, Germany, for one year.

Prior to her time in Europe, Camacho worked at Columbia University in the City of New York for 12 years. Camacho began her tenure at Columbia in August, 2003, as an assistant sports information director and was promoted to Associate Athletics Director for Athletics Communications in 2008. While there, Camacho supervised special high-level projects for the Athletics Director, served on the executive management team and oversaw all aspects of the Athletics Communications office, while serving as the main contact for the football program. A vital member of the administrative team, she played a key role in the creation and implementation of strategic initiatives including the development and production of selected special events such as the Columbia Athletics Hall of Fame.

A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Camacho worked for the UNC men's basketball program throughout her undergraduate years and was a student assistant in the Carolina Office of Athletic Media Relations as a junior and senior. She earned a bachelor's degree in journalism and mass communications in 1999.
