COLUMBIA, S.C. — Junior Jenny Bae posted a 1-over 73 to lead the No. 13-ranked Georgia women's golf team to a 301 team score in the opening round of the Gamecock Intercollegiate on Monday. The Bulldogs are in 15th place in the field that features four of the top-5 and 11 of the top-25 teams in the country.
Georgia's additional counting rounds were a 75 from Caroline Craig, a 76 by Jo Hua Hung and a 77 from Candice Mahé. Caterina Don shot 79, the Bulldogs' drop score, and Isabella Holpfer, who is competing individually, posted a 78.
Georgia battled back from a slow start to the day. The Bulldogs made the turn at 14-over as a team but rallied to shoot 1-under on the back-nine. Bae was 2-under after the turn, while Craig and Hung were 1-under and even, respectively.
"We showed some toughness today," head coach Josh Brewer said. "The round really could've gone in one of two directions after nine holes. We showed some grit and determination and hopefully created some momentum heading into tomorrow. We've been one of the best second round teams in the country this season. They've changed the format and we're going to play all day tomorrow. Maybe round two will bleed into round three and we'll move way up the leaderboard."
Overall, Bae is tied for 28th, Craig is tied for 47th, Hung is tied for 61st, Mahé is tied for 76th, Holpfer is tied for 79th and Don is tied for 87th.
No. 22 Duke carded a 6-under 282 to grab the team lead, four shots ahead of No. 4. There is a six-way tie for the individual lead at 4-under 68 with Erica Shepherd and Phoebe Brinker of Duke, Kendall Griffin of LSU, Lois Kaye Go of South Carolina, Nicole Adam of North Carolina and Blair Stockett of Mississippi State.
The Bulldogs will be paired with No. 20 Alabama and Texas A&M for Tuesday's second and third rounds. Play will begin with a shotgun start at 9:00 a.m., with the Bulldogs, Aggies and Crimson Tide teeing off from Nos. 13-15. Live scoring is available via golfstat.com.
