COLUMBIA, S.C. — The No. 13-ranked Georgia women's golf team ascended seven spots on the team leaderboard of the Gamecock Intercollegiateon Tuesday. When play at the Columbia Country Club was suspended at 5:45, the Bulldogs were in eighth place and midway through the final round.
"Could we just have round two every day for the rest of our lives?" head coach Josh Brewer joked.
In three spring tournaments, the Bulldogs are now a combined 7-under in second-round action.
"It was a good day and we moved up into contention," Brewer said. "We showed the firepower we have when we get clicking as a group. We talked about it last night. For some reason, we just came out a little flat yesterday. Today, we tried freeing some things up and trying to make as many birdies as possible. And we know we're going to make some bogeys. In basketball, just because you miss some shots doesn't mean you stop shooting. We wanted to go out and make as many birdies as we could, and we'll try to continue to have that same mindset tomorrow."
Tournament organizers started the final round a day early on Tuesday hoping to avoid a spotty weather forecast for Wednesday. Heavy rain is projected over night; however, conditions are expected to clear at approximately noon. If the tournament can't resume, Tuesday's 36-hole standings will become the final results.
Georgia entered the day in 15th place but shot an even-par 288 in the morning to climb to sixth place. The Bulldogs covered their portion of the third round at 5-over to slip back to eighth.
Jenny Bae's 3-under 69 led the way in the second round for the Bulldogs, who also counted a 1-under 71 from Caterina Don, a 1-over 73 from Jo Hua Hung and a 3-over 75 from Caroline Craig.
Bae started her day from No. 13 and blistered her first nine holes with five birdies. She cooled off with a bogey at No. 5 followed by a double at No. 6 but immediately regained two of those strokes with additional birdies at No. 7 and No. 10. She bogeyed No. 11 to slip back to 3-under before wrapping up her loop with a par.
Don also was hot early in the day. She teed off from No. 15 and birdied four of her first seven holes of the day. She eventually gave back three of those with bogeys at No. 6, No. 8 and No. 14.
In the third round, Don and Isabella Holpfer were even through 10 holes, Craig was 1-over through 10 holes, Candice Mahé was 1-over through nine holes, Bae was 3-over through nine holes and Hung was 4-over through 10 holes.
No. 22 Duke remains atop the team leaderboard at 4-under, six shots ahead of No. 2 South Carolina. Rounding out the top-10 teams are No. 5 Wake Forest, No. 11 Auburn, Vanderbilt, Mississippi State, the No. 13-ranked Bulldogs, No. 16 Arkansas and both No. 1 Baylor and No. 7 Ole Miss tied for 10th.
Individually, Duke's Erica Shepherd is at 8-under, three strokes ahead of the field. For Georgia, Bae is tied for 12th; Don is tied for 38th; Craig is tied for 46th; Holpfer, who is competing individually, and Hung are both tied for 57th; and Mahé is tied for 65th.
