COLUMBIA, S.C. --- Georgia senior Johannes Erm won his fifth collegiate heptathlon and redshirt sophomore teammate Kyle Garland earned runner-up honors to highlight the South Carolina Invitational on Saturday.

Erm and Garland, who have combined to win the last three Southeastern Conference heptathlon championships, gave the Bulldogs four heptathletes in the nation's current top 11 with their showing.

Kyprianou's Comments: "The boys accomplished the goal of weekend, which was to position them in a spot to qualify for the NCAA meet and stay healthy," said Bulldog head coach Petros Kyprianou.  "It was an easy training hep for these two and they came out healthy and happy with the outcome.  I thought we had some pretty good marks given that they were from short approach or without as much 'sharpness'.  Now back to work towards our main goal, the NCAA Championships.  Go Dawgs!"

The Lowdown: Coming in with matching personal records in the combined events 60-meter hurdles, the Bulldogs finished first and second in the event on Saturday.  Erm clocked an 8.20 to win and score 932 points while Garland managed an 8.29 for 910 points.  The Bulldog pair started and finished the day 1-2 overall.

Erm finished one spot ahead of his teammate in the pole vault as well.  He went over the bar at 14 feet, 5 ¼ inches to take fourth and score 731 points while Garland was fifth at 14-1.25 (702).

The heptathlon's finale, the 1000m, saw both Bulldogs complete the race within four seconds of their personal best.   Erm locked down his overall victory after registering a 2:40.62 for 867 points.  Garland came across the finish line in fourth thanks to his time of 2:50.39 (761).  He held off the third-place finisher by 43 points.

Next Up: The Bulldogs will return to action at the USC Indoor Open next Saturday while another group of Georgia teammates will travel to Nashville, Tenn., for the Music City Challenge on Friday and Saturday of next week.
