GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The No. 10-ranked Georgia women's golf team fired a 16-over 296 in Sunday's first round of the Florida Gators Invitational, putting the Bulldogs tied for eighth on the team leaderboard.
"We let the wind get to us early," head coach Josh Brewer said. "We let it affect us and cause us to hit some shots we'd like to take back. We did do a nice job adjusting and playing the back nine really well. We kept ourselves in it by battling all the way to the end, and we'll take that momentum into tomorrow. At least we didn't take 18 holes to figure it out."
After Georgia's five golfers were a combined 19-over at the turn, they covered the back side of the course at 5-over.
Caterina Don's 1-over 71 paced the Bulldogs and placed her in a tie for ninth in the individual field. In addition, Georgia counted a 73 by Celeste Dao, a 74 from Jenny Bae and a 78, the score posted by both Caroline Craig.
"Caterina got off to another good, solid start today," Brewer said. "We continues to build on her strong finish two weeks ago and put herself near the top of the leaderboard again this week."
Don tied for third at the Bulldogs' first event of the spring, shooting 6-under at the LTWF Heroes Intercollegiate.
Overall, Dao is tied for 21st, Bae is tied for 33rd and Craig and Hung are tied for 61st.
No. 14 UCF grabbed the first round lead with a 3-over 283, followed by No. 24 Tennessee 286; No. 16 Florida at 287; Ohio State at 289; No. 20 Alabama and Maryland both at 291; No. 4 Ole Miss at 293; the Bulldogs and No. 15 Miami at 296; Campbell at 297; and No. 23 Vanderbilt at 300. Florida's Annabell Fuller carded the best individual round of the day, a 3-under 67.
"We go out early tomorrow," Brewer said. "We we can get off to a better start, we know we have the ability to post the best round of the day and put ourselves back into contention. We'd like to be in the final group like we were at the last tournament and this time get a win."
Two weeks ago, the Bulldogs were seventh after the first round but bounced back with an 11-under effort on the second day to vault to third in the team field.
Georgia will be paired with Ole Miss and Miami for Tuesday's second round, which will be an 8:30 shotgun start due to the forecast of rain in the afternoon. The Bulldogs, Rebels and Hurricanes will begin the day on holes Nos. 8-10 . Live scoring is available via golfstat.com.
