GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Led by a 1-under 69 from sophomore Céleste Dao, the No. 10-ranked Georgia women's golf team carded a 4-over 284 in Monday's second round of the Florida Gators Invitational at UF's Mark Bostick Golf Course. Though the Bulldogs only climbed one spot on the leaderboard, they trimmed their margin to the tournament leader by five shots.
"Overall it was a solid day," head coach Josh Brewer said. "We almost had the low round of the day and were the low round for much of the day. We've gotten ourselves in position to win this golf tournament. We know we're seventh, but the team that entered today in seventh is now leading. We know we can make up shots. We were really close to putting up a special round. There are just one or two little things we need to change, and we feel like we'll have a chance to be at the top of the leaderboard and win this golf tournament."
Georgia is at 20-over 580 and in seventh place entering Tuesday's final round, eight shots off the pace of No. 4 Ole Miss.
"Overall, we know we're five deep and look forward to trying to post our best score of the spring tomorrow and being at the top of the leaderboard at the end of the day," Brewer said.
Dao was steady throughout her day, mixing three birdies with two bogeys en route to her fourth par-or-better round in 11 rounds this season. With the shotgun start, Dao began her day at No. 8. A trio of birdies at No. 12, No. 13 and No. 14 pushed her to 3-under through seven holes. Dao gave two of strokes back with bogeys at No. 17 and No. 4.
Georgia also counted a 71 from Caterina Don and a pair of 72s from Jenny Bae and Jo Hua Hung. A day after counting a 78, the Bulldogs dropped Caroline Craig's 73 on Monday.
"It was a good round by Céleste," Brewer said. "She continues to get better each day and give us even more confidence that multiple players can shoot under par for us on any given day. Again, it was a solid round by Caterina. She and Céleste are just outside the top 10 but close enough to still challenge the leaders."
Overall, Dao and Don are tied for 12th place individually at 2-over 142, four shots off the pace of co-leaders Anna Nordfors of Campbell, Aneka Seumanutafa of Ohio State and Virunpat Olankitkunchai of Maryland. Also for Georgia, Bae is tied for 22nd at 146, Hung is tied for 48th at 150 and Craig is tied for 56th at 151.
Following the Rebels on the team leaderboard and rounding out the top 10 are No. 14 UCF and Maryland both at 573; No. 15 Miami at 577; No. 16 Florida and No. 20 Alabama at 578; the Bulldogs at 580; No. 24 Tennessee at 582; Campbell at 586; and Ohio State at 587.
Georgia will be paired with Tennessee and Campbell for Tuesday's second round, which will be an 8:30 shotgun start. The Bulldogs, Vols and Camels will tee off from holes Nos. 8-10, with live scoring updated on a three-hole basis via golfstat.com.
