Quick Chat: Chloe Chapman

A year ago at this time, Chloe Chapman was still a two-sport Georgia student-athlete. There was soccer in the fall and then an immediate transition to the women's basketball team. She tried it for two years and that was enough — she's a full-time basketball player now.

A junior from Mitchellville, Md., the speedy, 5-foot-7 Chapman spent the fall not over at the Turner Soccer Complex but at Stegeman Coliseum. It's the first time in her life she's been a one-sport athlete and Chapman can already see the improvement in her game thanks to being able to focus on just basketball.

During a recent Quick Chat, Chapman talked about playing just one sport, dressing up as Batgirl, her sneaker buying strategy, and much more. Here's some of what she had to say:

Frierson: How hard was the decision to give up soccer and just focus on basketball?

Chapman: It was really difficult. Going from playing both my whole life to having to pick one, it was a hard decision. But I knew it was a decision I had to make in order to further goals for basketball.

Frierson: Is there one part of soccer that you miss the most?

Chapman: I definitely miss the team, I miss the environment, the games — the feel and love that I have for the game.

Frierson: What has it been like to go from having two sports to focus on to now just having one? Have you already seen it make a difference in your basketball?

Chapman: Definitely my body appreciates it. Of course, I do see improvement. I'm just a lot more comfortable and locked in when it comes to basketball. When it comes to the system that we have here at UGA and knowing all of the plays, I'm just a lot more comfortable now that I've been here the whole time (during the preseason).

Frierson: What was your favorite toy when you were a kid?

Chapman: I used to play with K'NEX a lot, and LEGOs. I liked building things and I was really into architecture.

Frierson: Did that interest carry forward? Did you think about studying architecture in college?

Chapman: Maybe for a second I did, but then I realized I really didn't want to do math anymore. And architecture is a really difficult field of study. But it definitely transferred over into my creative side as far as art and stuff like that.

Frierson: Who is the funniest person on the team this season?

Chapman: Everyone has their own sense of humor and we're a really funny team, but this year, it's probably Kimmy (Kimora Jenkins), one of the freshmen. She's really funny, just a natural sense of humor and super genuine. I just love her personality.

Frierson: As we do this, Halloween is right around the corner, so what is the best costume you ever wore?

Chapman: I was Batgirl for many years in a row growing up, so I'd have to go with that one. I loved that costume.

Frierson: What is your favorite Halloween candy?

Chapman: Probably Reese's, my typical favorite candy. I'll only grab the ones I normally eat on the regular.

Frierson: Is there a food that you loved when you were younger that you no longer like? Or something that you hated when you were young but have since come to really like?

Chapman: I really didn't like pancakes that much growing up. I wouldn't say I love them now but I'll eat some if they're there. But I really used to hate pancakes. I don't know, I just didn't like them — I was always a waffle person.

Frierson: I know you're a big sneakerhead, we've talked about that before, so is there a new pair of sneakers that you're really excited about?

Chapman: There are a couple. I got pretty lucky on SNKRS, which is the Nike shoe app. The Travis Scott Air Jordan 1s, it made me really happy to see that I got those. And another pair of Nike Dunks that I got.

Frierson: Is there a whole science to following the sneaker world and being able to get the ones you want before they sell out?

Chapman: Yes, I'd definitely say so. I follow lots of shoe pages and release pages, and there's this one page on Twitter that I follow that always lets you know when stuff is dropping — kind of like secret drops that you wouldn't really know about unless you hear about it from them.

I have their notifications on for my phone and I'm always getting notifications for what's coming up. I'm always checking SNKRS, so, yeah, it's kind of constant.

Frierson: Is there a feeling of victory when you get in there and get the ones you want in time?

Chapman: [Laughs] Yes, there is. Sometimes you have to wait in a (virtual) line, or you're waiting to check out, and I'm always super anxious just waiting to get to the checkout part. Once I get there and I get a confirmation, it's a really happy day for me.
