Quick Chat: Alexa Fortin

Two years ago, when Georgia volleyball's Alexa Fortin sat down for her first Quick Chat, the 5-foot-11 setter from Johns Creeks, Ga., was a freshman embarking on so many things for the first time. Fortin is now a third-year student and a redshirt sophomore for the Bulldogs, an experienced student-athlete in every sense.

Despite all that's happened over the past two years with the pandemic, Fortin said she felt like her time at Georgia was quickly flying by. During a Quick Chat after practice Tuesday, she talked about being at Georgia, her relationship with her teammates, thinking about the future, and much more. Here's some of what she had to say:

Frierson: We did one of these two years ago. Given everything that's happened since then with the pandemic and beyond, does it feel like it's been two years? For me, it almost feels like four or five.

Fortin: I would think that it would feel like that, but honestly, it's felt like a couple of months. It literally feels so fast. It seems like it would be so much longer because of COVID, but when I think about it I'm like, I'm a junior and I feel like I got here four days ago [laughs].

Frierson: So does it feel a little weird to be this far into your time at Georgia? Is it rushing by too quickly?

Fortin: I wouldn't necessarily say it's a good thing that it's flying by, because I think college is a fun time and all of our friends are here and we all get to all of the fun college stuff. Part of me's like, I don't want it to end. But then it's like, OK, this is cool, I'm growing up and getting older [laughs]. Both sides are fun but there are pros and cons to each.

Frierson: I would never ask a freshman one of my usual questions, which is, in a perfect world what are you doing in 10 years? But not that you're a junior, do you have any idea what you'd like to be doing 10 years from now?

Fortin: My major is Sport Management now, so I'm hopefully going to do something involved with sports. That's the most interesting thing to me, and then I want a family. I'm a big family person so I would like to have a big family in the next 10 years [laughs].

Frierson: What is something you are way better at now, on or off the court, than you were when you first got here?

Fortin: I think one big thing from freshman year is that I'm close with everyone now. The relationships that I have now are so much more fun on the court and off the court. Freshman year, I didn't really know anyone and you're a freshman so you're kind of separated from everyone. I just love the relationships I have now with everyone. We're like best friends on the court and then when we're not playing volleyball we still hang out all the time. It's so fun to have those relationships.

Frierson: Are those relationships deeper than you ever imagined they would be?

Fortin: I would say yes. For example, Dalaney, she was at my club but she was two or three years older than me so I didn't really know her. And now we're close and I really value that relationship. It's so fun to see how all of these relationships have really grown.

Frierson: Have you developed a different appreciation for volleyball in your time here? Do you see the sport in a different way after two-plus years at this level?

Fortin: I definitely think being here puts volleyball in a different perspective than I've ever had. And just playing teams in the SEC and teams like Nebraska, it shows you the bigness of volleyball, if that's even a word. You go from club to playing all of these huge teams. I think that's been one of the coolest things, playing all of the big teams and seeing how people come from club. Even people we played against in club, some of them are now at Nebraska. It's like, I played against you in club and now you're at one of the tops schools in the country.

Frierson: Do you have a creative side? Is there anything creative you do or wish you could do?

Fortin: I do random little crafts. I have my iPad and I do little artsy things on there. I'll do little random cartoon things, not like artistic. I'm not going to paint a person, but more like cartoonish crafty things that are fun.

Frierson: Who is the funniest person on the team?

Fortin: I'd have to say Kacie Evans or Mallory Hernandez. They both crack me up all the time [laughs]. They're always cracking jokes at random times and you're just sitting there giggling.
