Bulldogs Face Gators Friday In Jacksonville
October 27, 2021 | Baseball
ATHENS, Ga. -----The University of Georgia baseball team battles the University of Florida in a fall exhibition Friday at 6:30 p.m. in Jacksonville at 121 Financial Ballpark.
Tickets are $15 and available online via Ticketmaster at the following link: https://gado.gs/7kd. The exhibition will be held at the home of the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, the Triple-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins. A fireworks show is planned after the exhibition.
The Bulldogs are in their ninth year under Ike Cousins head baseball coach Scott Stricklin. The Bulldog roster features 29 returning lettermen, 14 newcomers and four players that were redshirted last year. Georgia's incoming recruiting class has been ranked as high as 15th nationally. The Florida exhibition will conclude fall workouts for the Bulldogs. Junior ace right-hander Jonathan Cannon will get the start Friday with several members of the staff expected to see action in the planned 10-inning affair. Also, both teams will feature 10 hitters in their lineup.
Georgia defeated Western Carolina 29-4 in a planned 16-inning exhibition back on Oct. 10 in Athens. On Sept. 28, Georgia dispatched the Ontario (Canada) Nationals 18-1 at Foley Field. Last year, Georgia posted a 31-25 mark while the Gators finished 38-22.
The schools, in partnership with the City of Jacksonville, ASM-Global Jacksonville and 121 Financial Ballpark, added a baseball exhibition to the week's activities that center around the annual Georgia-Florida football game. That game will be played Saturday at TIAA Bank Field and be televised by CBS Sports at 3:30 p.m.
The agreement for the baseball exhibition extends beyond this year, as the programs will face off on the eve of the annual Georgia-Florida football game through 2023 or possibly to 2025 should the schools exercise a football game agreement through the latter year. The home team for the baseball exhibition will rotate each year, beginning with Florida as the home team in 2021. The agreement is notwithstanding any NCAA or SEC actions resulting in the elimination of fall baseball games or scrimmages. In 2019, the teams played an exhibition in Jacksonville while the 2020 contest was canceled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. UF won the 2019 exhibition 5-3 in front of a crowd of 8,640.
