Phillips Leading Williams Cup By Two Strokes

WILMINGTON, N.C. --- Georgia's Trent Phillips matched his career-best round and opened a 2-shot lead after 36 holes to highlight the Bulldogs' showing Monday in the inaugural Williams Cup presented by STITCH Golf.
On Eagle Point Golf Club's par-72, 7,364-yard layout, Phillips opened with a clean card as he posted eight birdies for an 8-under 64. The Georgia senior previously posted an 8-under 64 in The Carmel Cup in 2018 and an 8-under 62 in the 2020 Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate.
In the second round, also on Monday, Phillips carded a 3-under 69 to move to 11-under 133. Phillips is two strokes clear of Maximilian Steinlechner of NC State.
The Williams Cup medalist will receive an exemption to compete in the Korn Ferry Tour's Rex Hospital Open at TPC Wakefield Plantation in Raleigh, N.C., June 2-5, 2022.
As a team, the No. 16-ranked Bulldogs landed in fourth at 3-under 573 with rounds of 2-over 290 and 5-under 283. North Carolina opened with a total of 12-under 564.
Freshman Buck Brumlow followed Phillips at even-par 144 with loops of 3-over 75 and 3-under 69. Freshman Maxwell Ford, whose brother David plays for host North Carolina, signed for a 5-over 77 and a 1-under 71 for a 4-over 148. Junior Connor Creasy had two rounds of 2-over 74 to also check in at 4-over 148. Junior Nicolas Cassidy went 6-over 78 and 5-over 77 for a total of 11-over 155.
Playing as an individual, senior Will Kalhstorf posted a 5-over 77 and an even-par 72 for a 5-over 149.
The Williams Cup will conclude with 18 holes on Monday. Georgia will be paired with Louisville and Michigan State in 10-minute increments between 8:30 and 9:10 a.m.
